Milpitas, California is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Milpitas is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and it is bordered by the cities of Hercules, Pleasanton and Walnut Creek. The first European to visit Milpitas was Antonio de Menocal in 1769. A landing party of Spanish soldiers and exploration party led by Gaspar de Portolá explored this area during their 1821 journey from Monterey to Sonoma County. On July 12, 1824, a group of Americans under license from Spain landed at what is now Marina del Rey and established a ranch there called Rancho Los Alarcón. This land would later become part of Milpitas when it incorporated as a City in 1906. In 1865, American Civil War veteran General Nelson Akeley purchased land east of today's downtown Milpitas for $5 per acre which he named "Akeley Ranch". He used it as his facto summer home until his death in 1913. In 1905 Akeley's widow sold him an additional 640 acres (250 hectares) to build what became known as "Akeley Park". Today’s park includes portions of both Akeley Ranch and Aleyken Park which were combined into one parcel by Acts voted on February 15th and November 3rd, 1924 respectively; also included within that parcel were sections of Chavez Ravine that are now part of Oakland Federal Credit Union headquarters campus - affectionately known as "Rancho Chavez" or simply "Chavez". On October 16th 1912 a large earthquake struck Napa County with an estimated magnitude 7.9 (). The force caused widespread damage across southern Napa Valley including Santa Clara County where Milpitas lived for many years afterwards before moving out altogether due to the fear that the earth would buckle beneath its weight should another massive earthquake strike again relatively soon. Prior to this event only two events had ever triggered building-wide landslides throughout Ventura County- both involving structures such as churches: One resulting in the collapse of El Camino Real church near Thousand Oaks on March 24th 1888 (resulting inURL://www.randompediaonline .com/event/napavalleyearthquake ); whilst the other involved destruction & lossof life within the Sepulveda Dam complex situated just north-west Of Ventura Boulevard between Thousand Oaks & Encinitas on January 13th 1915 (resulting inURL://www1 .nps.gov /nrbook/nrpbase/search?q=%7B%22name%22%3AHercules+Pleasanton&oe=UTF-8&btnI
