Mission Viejo, California is a city located in the San Diego County region of Southern California. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 166,622. The Mission Viejo area was first settled by Ohlone people in 1776. A small mission was established in 1821 and later enlarged to become Mission Santa Clara de Asís, which served as the capital of Alta California from 1824 until Mexican independence in 1846. The missions were national symbols and played an important role in VictorianCalifornia society and culture. After Mexican independence, Mission Santa Clara became part of Mexico City while Mission San Fernando became part of Los Angeles County. In 1912, however, both missions were re-established as independent churches with their own bishops. During World War II, many German Americans living in southern San Diego County went into service during the war effort as military personnel or civilians; some formed their own barrio groups known as "Germans on the borderline." Upon occupation by Japan during World War II, most Germans retreated to Germany but some remained behind and began establishing businesses owned by Japanese Americans such as Katz's Deli and Yoshi's Donuts (now Hiroaki Niizumi). The community came together to demand that the Japanese be given fair treatment under American law following Hiroshima bombings; this led to enactment of Executive Order 9066 which prohibited Japanese American citizens from owning land or taking any actions that would prejudice American war efforts. Although many people tried to live peacefully within the new boundaries set for them by government policy, tension mounted between those who felt they had been wronged and those who saw themselves as victimized unfairly by government powerlessness. A series of mass armed robberies occurred throughout 1942-1944 mainly against Jewishowned businesses; these events are considered one factor leading to social unrest culminating in the Boyle Heights bombing on July 26th 1944 which killed four young boys ages 11-14 at a Goods Store near downtown Los Angeles

The original mission built by Father Junípero Serra was destroyed by an earthquake in 1836, but new missions were constructed within a decade. The Santa Ana Missions continued to be operated until 1853, when they became part of Rancho Santa Anita. In 1871, the Mexican government transferred ownership of Rancho Santa Anita to John Sutter for development into what is now downtown Los Angeles. Sutter named his company (later Western Electric) after his personal friend Don José Antonio Vargas y Lemos, who had donated land for the town site. In 1901, Mission San Fernando Rey de España was founded as part of efforts to revive California'somingrassettoMexico connection; it served as a Catholic cathedral and school until 1954 and today houses many businesses and apartments near Interstate 5/UCLA campus. During World War II: Navy personnel stationed at various naval stations along Southern California's coast bunked down in nearby Naval Air Station Miramar during both Battle of Leyte Gulf (1955) and Battle off Samar (1957). Mission Viejo was first founded in 1771 by Franciscans. The town was named after the Mission San Gabriel, a Spanish friar's religious center in California. It became an American territory on February 14, 1821, when Mexico won its war with Spain. The mission had five stores and 367 residents when it closed in 1826. The last resident left on December 12 of that year. A post office operated at Mission Viejo from 1828 to 1850. In 1893, the United States acquired Mission Viejo as part of Alta California under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It became an incorporated city on January 1, 1907. In 1952 it reverted to Mexican jurisdiction and is now called Ciudad Juárez
