Mission Viejo, California is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 25,883 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Orange County and it is bordered by San Bernardino to the north, Riverside to the east, and Tustin to the south. Mission Viejo was founded in 1771 by Franciscan missionaries under Father Junípero Serra. The mission served as a center for evangelism and education in what is now Orange County. In 1821, Mission San José became the first successful American mission in California. Padres Obregon and José Joaquin María Pico made an attempt to establish missions at nearby points but these failed due to lack of support from Governor Graynor Alford. The first post office opened at Mission Viejo on December 12, 1872, serving residents of Irvine Canyon Township and parts of Knotts Valley Ranch until September 1909 when that outpost closed with the transfer of its mailing address to Riverside City Hall. In 1933–1934 a new ballpark was built for Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games called Chavez Ravine Park; it remains one of only three stadiums in North America still used for professional baseball after more than fifty years (the other two being Fenway Park and Wrigley Field). The park hosted some major events during World War II including open-air air concerts by popular acts like Joe Bonamassa as well as air raids during Operation Overlord on June 8th 1945 which damaged most if not all civilian targets within about half an hour's radius; however no damage was done to Mission Viejo structures or people living there at that time- this event has been cited as possibly being responsible for causing many local redevelopment projects starting around then such as numerous housing projects throughout downtown areas today which were started primarily because of military activity having taken place nearby back then (and continue up through present day). Mission Viejo, California was founded by Father Francisco Lopez in 1821 as a mission in the Santa Ana Mountains. The original mission buildings were destroyed in an earthquake in 1873, but new structures were built and the mission continued to operate until 1892. Mission Viejo was first populated by Mission Indians who hunted and fished in the Santa Ana Mountains. In 1795, Spanish soldiers discovered gold near present-day Mission Viejo and began minting coins to trade for goods they found along the way. Development of the town began with a group of entrepreneurs who wanted to establish a trading post on what is now downtown Mission Viejo. By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in Mission Viejo. In 1821, Father Lopez founded Mission San Antonio de Padua at what is now known as Adobe Park on Upper Huntington Avenue NE. For many years, this mission was one of largest and most prosperous missions within California due to its location and abundance of resources. However, because it was located so close to Mexicali and other Mexican settlements, Missions San Antonio also became targets for attack by bandits and raiders from that region. Despite these challenges, Father Lopez continued to preach Christianity throughout much of California’s Gold Rush era; however, he never lost hope for his people or their future prospects in America’s largest state (he returned to America after two years). In 1853–54, his successor Juan Bautista Moreno consecrated several small chapels around the city center which would becomeSt John’s Cathedral today (the first church dedicated outside of Mexico City). As American settlers invaded Southern California during the 1850s looking for land grants or mining rights along the US-Mexico borderlands where gold had been discovered since 1785 – including parts of Orange County – missionaries such as Fathers Manuel Nieto and José Gomez arrived at various missions with provisions for ecclesiastical purposes only (these men did not actually live among their converts). The padres typically took up residence among secular Mexican ranchers near some potential mines or cattle herds while conducting religious services; however ranchhands often interfered with these activities because they saw no advantage either material or spiritual gain could bring them over their Indian neighbors living peacefully within sight of Alta Verde Rancho de la Costa just east of Los Angeles County . As early as 1851 Manuel Nieto had organized an expedition into southern California against Apaches led by Captain George Kleber that included about 50 men under his command numbering mainly Native Americans from Mono Lake
