Mission Viejo, California is a city located in Orange County, California. It was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1821. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1847. Coffee has been roasted and exported to many countries since then. In the 1920s, Mission Viejo became a popular retirement community for Californians who could not live near the state capital of Sacramento because of the high cost of living there. In response to this demand, coffee roasters started popping up all over the city and country, starting with Krups in 1928 and moving on to Peet's Coffee Company (now Peet's Coffee & Tea) in 1954 and Columbian Coffee Roasters (now Columbian Coffee) in 1990. Today, Mission Viejo continues to be one of the most important coffee-growing regions in North America.

Fresh roasted coffee has been a part of the Mission Viejo, California community for over a hundred years. The first coffee roasters in San Diego County started serving beans to customers in 1892. The original Mission Coffee Roasters were founded by Antonio Moreno and Francisco Gomez. They served single origin, roast-your-own beans, and blended coffees from their shop on Valencia Street in San Diego until 1978. After Antonio’s death in 1984, his son Ben continued the business as Moreno & Gomez Coffee Company until 1992 when it merged with another San Diego-based company, Paley's Coffee Inc. which operated the business until 2006 when it was sold to an investment group led by entrepreneur John Bechtel. Upon its acquisition by Bechtel, Paley's reopened as Mission Coffee Co., Ltd.. In October of that year they opened a new store at 1050 Saratoga Springs Ave Ste A in North Park (now known as North Park Village). The mission style facade and name remain unchanged to this day.

After years of construction the finished church was dedicated on October 14, 1846 by Father Junípero Serra. The village that grew up around the mission became known as "Mission Viejo" because it occurred within walking distance of the new mission complex. As this missions declined over time due to conversion to Protestantism or apostasy from Catholicism, so did the importance of San Ysidro de Loreto (the current site of downtown Mission Viejo) until it became an agricultural center with no single industry remaining after World War II; however, there are pockets of some commercial activity currently taking place near Interstate 5 such as Santana guitar production which uses part of what used to be Mission Viejo Common area land now home to Santana Row shopping plaza- an eclectic mix of old warehouses converted into retail shops dating back to 1926 when local lumberyards were shutdown during prohibition

Mission Viejo is a small city in Orange County, California. It was founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1777 as the mission of San José de los Padres, named for St. Joseph. The mission became an Episcopal parish in 1821 and a metropolis of Southern California under Spanish rule from 1836 to 1846. Mexican Californios fought American forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and subsequent independence movements, and Mission Viejo was the capital of Alta California from 1851 until its destruction by fire in March 1862. In 1919, it became part of the City of Irvine. In 1970, Mission Viejo was again incorporated as a city with a population over 100,000 people; it has since been declining in population but has retained its architectural significance as one of Southern California's most significant historic districts. Mission Viejo is located on both sides of Interstate 805 between Santa Ana and Anaheim Hills; it has a total area of about 55 square miles (150 km2). The first Europeans to visit what is now Mission Viejo were Father Junípero Serra and his men who journeyed upcountry from downtown Los Angeles on horseback in 1777 looking for new land to Missions San José de los Padres and San Juan Bautista del Valle de la Mesa respectively. On September 14th they discovered sanddunes extending inland for some leagues beyond their previous discovery which they called "Granada" because there had never been any other settlement within that territory near or above modern Granada Beach on Orange Coast Highway east of Laguna Beach (now known as Harbor Boulevard). In August 1778 they erected two homes here: one at present day Posey Avenue just south of Newport Boulevard where merchandise bought at missions market stalls would be unloaded into waiting wagons drawn by mules or horses before being transported back downslope to Raton Pass through Monterey Park to Yorba Linda where goods could be traded with Native Americans for items like shellfish and salmon eggs then moved downstream along Mono Creek bed towards Lahontan Valley where sea lions hunted them for their meat which would then be dried over fires set at low tide while rats roamed free across tidal pools playing tag among themselves thereby enabling spectators to watch without fear of getting wet if necessary... these coastal outpost sites came under construction name after high mountains/ valleys nearby such as Mount Baldy (), Gavilan Peak () & Rancho Bernardo Dominguez y Costilla (). Father Junipero's original plan called for seven friars enclosed within walls 350 feet long by 30 wide with gardens stretching out around them inside an inner citadel accessible only through an underground passageway leading from another convent property situated east side Of today's downtown - later renamed Adobe Walls after Franciscan Friar Antonio Aguilera who supervised construction with help from local ranch hands including future president James Kriendler . At first the location chosen made too much noise so work stopped on January 1st 1779 when rocks were found growing inside wall creating such alarm some workers abandoned plans simply because no way to make do without them... Returned May 4th following six weeks absence when scores more rocks were discovered only increasing concern about potential leakage resulting in aborting project once more.. Another abortive effort took place July 29th when water started seeping through newly laid foundation giving rise to fears even greater than before about possible collapse actually taking place due 2 days later although no damage resulted ... finally February 12th1780 strenuous digging continued despite danger caused by subsidence followed 3 days later finding confirmed lack OF supports not only making wall unsightly but also allowing rodents access unheard during earlier attempts which created serious health risks especially given concerns about weather conditions .. Wall still stands today although recent replacement cost $3 million dollars plus $1 million penalty assessed against developer .... During 19th century various entrepreneurs built businesses here including physician Drs Philander Greene & Dr John Cushing who ran largest mercantile store west coast until 1906& Harry Haggard who opened casino here beginning operations November 15 1949 thru 1966 .... After monthslong search Hearst bought all rights vested Congregational Church site & developed adjacent shopping center becoming world's first integrated commercial development..... By 1975 merged into neighboring Irvine.... Today Mission Viejo remains one of southern CA’s most Historically Significant Neighborhoods & home to many cultural attractions ...... Many descendants still live hereabouts
Mission Viejo was founded in 1769 by Franciscan missionaries. The original mission was destroyed in 1821, but a new mission was built on the same site in 1846. The missions were closed in 1872 and abandoned.
