The first coffee company to open in Mission Viejo was the San Francisco Coffee Company, which opened in 1875. Mission Viejo, California is a city in Orange County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was estimated to be 118,673. The City of Mission Viejo was founded in 1827 by Franciscans as a small mission economy for trade and agriculture. In 1906 it became an incorporated town under the name of Mission Viejo. It has since become one of Southern California's most affluent communities with high-rise buildings and vast single family homes. The first Europeans to visit Mission Viejo were José Altuve and Manuel Nieto on November 1, 1769 while they were exploring south central California. They named their discoveries "Los misioneros" (the missionaries). Jesuits arrived in San Diego in 1778 and began missionary work at Laguna de Santa Ana (present day San Diego) where they built missions such as La Compañía Real de Nuestra Señora del Refugio (1787), El Escondido (1802), and Presidio de Monterey (1821). A second group of Jesuits arrived at Mission Viejo on October 25, 1819 and landed near what is now known as Point Conception because that is where they erected the first Catholic church in Orange County. The new mission was called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Refugio y Setecientos Párrafos (Church of Our Lady of Refuge and Seventy-Five Nuns). On July 24, 1826 Mexican president Antonio López De Leguizamón issued a decree grants Rancho Paso Robles to José María Alvarado Carrillo which included parts of what are now Mission Viejo, Yorba Linda Village, Little Rock Canyon Park and part of Red Hill Canyon Park today. In 1827 Father Fernando Ruiz established a school system with thirty students including seven religious brothers who taught reading/writing/math/Christian faith among other subjects; grammar; Latin; geography; history; philosophy; theology; French language skills among others This system would continue until 1905 when Ruiz left due to illness leaving his replacement Francisco Javier Urtubey who served until 1840 When Ruiz again returned he found that many pupils had deserted or been replaced by more talented children so he ordered all but six boys from school leading to much ridicule from the community fathers However this order too would be rescinded after only six months whenRuiz discovered that some students were beingaught without proper instruction The last 1st grade lesson ever given at our old School house #1 on Solano Street back then... Mission Viejo was founded in 1795 by Father Francisco Vallejo and Mission San José de la Purísima Concepción was built two years later. The mission became a parish in 1828, with the addition of Rancho Santa Margarita. In 1836, the Mexican government transferred ownership of Mission San José to the United States following its war with Mexico. The property passed through several hands until it was bought by Walter Mitty in 1923 and used as an outdoor advertising center for his aviation company. In 1954, California State University, Long Beach opened its first campus in Mission Viejo. In 1969, Eastern Nazarene University moved from Gardena to Mission Viejo and Southern Nazarene University followed suit in 1984. In 2006, La Salle College moved from El Segundo to Mission Viejo after 15 years of operation at Harbor City Campus. In 2013-14, UC Riverside opened a new campus in nearby Northridge and seamless integration of that school's student body into the larger university has mademission Viejo one of the most integrated college towns in California
Mission Viejo was founded in 1776 by Father José Antonio de Anza and the rest of the Franciscan Mission San Fernando Rey de España. The mission was located on a hill overlooking the city, and it took over two years to build. The first resident pastor, Fray Juan Bautista de la Cueva, arrived in 1777. In 1821, Mission Viejo became part of California under the Mexican government. In 1848, during the Mexican Civil War, Californios voted to secede from Mexico and become an independent nation known as California. The area that includes today's Mission Viejo was part of this new state. The original mission buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1851. A new mission was built but failed to take off because it was too expensive to maintain and too small for the population. A third mission building was built in 1876 but burned down in 1888. A fourth mission building was built in 1911-12 but also burned down soon after completion due to a lack of finances. It reopened as an art museum later that year.
