Mission Viejo is one of Southern California's most affluent communities and has been called "The City of Oaks". The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Orange County were two Spanish missionaries, Fray Ignacio López de Mendoza and Father José Altamirano, who arrived on October 14, 1769. They founded the Mission San Juan Capistrano (now part of Pasadena) on the site of what is now Mission Viejo. The mission was enlarged in 1795 by Father Junípero Serra with land that he donated from his Rancho Santa Ana del Sur estate. In 1821, after Mexico acquired Alta California through the Mexican-American War, San Diego became part of Mexico and AltaCalifornia passed to the United States as part of Treaty #1911. On September 15th 1846 Don José Joaquin Peralta organized a company to build a road from Los Angeles over Sonora Pass into central California – this road became known as the Peraltas Trail. On July 6th 1847 local pioneers met at what is now Happy Valley Park in order to select land for their new townsite which would be named after José María Villarroel y Crespo who had led an expedition against Adobe Walls on June 25th 1846 Villarroel had sailed up coast from Vera Cruz Bay on November 2nd 1840 seeking passage across Mono Lake when he discovered an uninhabited peninsula extending into Mono Lake about midway between today's Modoc Hills and Pasadena Hills within present day El Monte & Pomona Counties. He named it Isla del Encanto (Island of Enchantment). After its founding Villejuif voted to change its name to Mission Viejo because “the Gusanos or Padres [of] San Diego had done nothing more than establish themselves here” while residents near Monterey Point desired “Misiones” meaning Missions nearby while others such as Captain James Cook thought because it was only twenty miles south of Los Angeles they could probably get water there too so they changed their minds upon further inspection but Villejuif persisted Californios also renamed many missions following their establishment including Friar Junípero Serra’s original Buena Vista Soberania located just east off downtown LA making it still active today as La Purísima Concepción Parish Church - all without input from vestal virgins! viejitas?…. ha! ha!…welcome home kid

Mission Viejo, California was founded in 1795 by Franciscan missionaries. The mission was the first permanent European settlement in the area and is now a Historic District, designated on July 14, 1969. The town of Mission Viejo has grown around the mission and other associated properties since its founding. The original site of Mission Viejo was north of present-day San Diego County on an area that is now known as Rancho Santa Margarita. The land was given to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for his part in setting out from Mexico City to explore North America during the 16th century. In 1795, Father Francisco Urquiza, the founder of modern day San Diego and Alta California Missions, set out from Mexico City with two hundred Mexican soldiers to found a mission at what is today Mission Viejo. On November 6, 1795, they reached what is now San Diego County and began their journey up the coast towards Monterey Bay. In 1821 Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico after overthrowing Maximilian I of Mexico and declared himself emperor of all North America. Because López de Santa Anna desired possession of all California territory (including both Alta California Missions and parts of Los Angeles), he ordered Spanish military forces to cross into northern California in order seize control over much of what is today Orange County (and adjacent inland counties). To prevent this seizure attempt, General José Joaquín De Arguelles led a force consisting mostly Native American soldiers against López de Santa Anna’s army at Cahuenga Pass on November 9-10, 1821. After losing nearly three thousand men including most top commanders including Arguelles himself despite numerical superiority (the combined native forces were only about one third as strong as those fielded by López de Santa Anna), Arguelles withdrew his armylanding at El Cajon on December 4 following a stormy winter campaign which cost him many horses and equipment; this action savedMission Viejo from possible conquest by Spanish troops attempting to retake it two years later when Father Urquiza returned from India with reinforcements The missions were not abandoned but used for storage or converted into barracks until 1840 when Bishop Manuel Nieto moved them back inside the walls for goodafter earthquakes destroyed some structuresthe missions remained unattended until 1906 when they were leased by virtue of Rancho Rincon del Diablo nearpresent day Carlsbad Caverns National Park .
