Mission Viejo, California is known for its beaches and its USS Enterprise Museum. But the city also has a rich maritime history that goes back to 1848. That year, Mission San José de la Roca was founded on what is now the corner of Camino Real and Camino del Rey Streets in Mission Viejo. The mission was named after Fathers Junípero Serra and José de Jesús Obregon, who were both priests from Spain. The first ship to be built at the site was the Santiago, which sailed into San Diego Harbor on December 12, 1848. The first marine salvage operation took place in 1850 when a team of divers discovered a Spanish treasure fleet hidden off the coast of Isla Jima. In 1862, the first lighthouse ever built in California was erected here. It called “Lighthouse Hill” and it was located on Point Loma Boulevard between Third Street and Fourth Street. In 1915, a new lighthouse called “Lighthouse Ship” was erected on Camino Real Beach near present-day Point Reyes Station while still under construction by then-Mayor Tom Bradley (D). The “Lighthouse Ship” served as a lighthouse until 1942 when it became decommissioned due to shellfire damage caused by Japanese bombers during World War II. In 1967, the City of San Diego acquired land adjacent to Point Reyes Station in order to build an athletic complex that would become known as Qualcomm Stadium (now Levi Strauss Stadium). As part of this project, two ferries were sunk into Camino Real Beach in order to serve as docks for dockworkers constructing stadium infrastructure including restrooms and water tanks for nearby residences. These ferries are now visitor attractions known as pier 21st Avenue N & Pico Boulevard/Marine Drive & Pier 21st Avenue S just south of current day Point Reyes Station reconstruction area inclusive of all annexed parcels since 1967 which currently encompasses approximately . Mission Viejo, California is a city located in western Orange County, in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 122,512. The area now comprising Mission Viejo was first settled by Spaniards in 1769 as Rancho Santa Ana de los Cucamonga. It was developed as an agricultural community during the 1920s and 1930s by landowner John T. Moffitt, who named it after Spanish missions that he had visited while traveling through southern California. The mission churches were destroyed in a fire in 1851 and never rebuilt; however, their ruins are still visible today on First Street between Euclid Avenue and Avenida Juana La Raza. The name "Mission Viejo" was given to the community because its founders believed that Jesus Christ had come to take them up to heaven when He left Earth for good at the end of His age. In 1923,42-year-old Mayor Manuel Alvarado dedicated one of Los Angeles' first public parks—Moffitt Park—in honor of Moffitt's Donation Park project. Alvarado also founded (and served as City Attorney) during this time period what would later become known as Orange County’s first law enforcement agency: The Sheriff’s Department was established on May 1, 1924 with Captain George Wickersham as its first commanding officer.—

Mission Viejo (from Spanish, "mission" meaning "place of prayer") is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 73,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Mission Viejo's history began with Juan Diego's journey from Mexico City in 1642 to preach the gospel to Native Americans near present-day Santa Ana. In 1769 Father Junípero Serra built an mission on top of Mount Carmel and named it after himself, Mission San José de Guadalupe. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Alvarado went into exile in Monterey County and General José Joaquín de Arguelles took over the government of Mexico and established another military garrison at San Pedro de la Laguna for repression of American settlers. The first post office opened at Mission Viejo on October 10, 1847. In 1861 the name was changed to Victorville because it had been decided by voters that all villages within orange county should have a single name because of their close proximity to one another. On December 12th 1870 boundaries were set for what are now Riverside and Westminster counties seat which made Victorville an agricultural center with over 20 miles (32 km) worth of roads connecting it with other rural areas across Los Angeles County
Mission Viejo was founded in 1719 as a mission by Spanish missionaries. The original mission was called San Diego de Alcalá and was located on the edge of present-day Mission Viejo. The name change to San Miguel de Allende in 1744 due to religious conflict between the missions of Alcalá and Santa Cruz del Norte. In 1821, Mexico achieved independence from Spain, which led to the Mexican–American War. As part of the war, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Mission San Miguel closed because it had not submitted to Mexican rule. After the war,missionSan Miguel reopened in 1823 under new leadership including padre José Joaquín Escobar y Ulloa. In 1835,the church and convent were combined into one compound known as la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (The Our Lady of Deliverance). The first building constructed for the school at Coyote Hills was completed in 1857. From 1850 until 1865, most of what is now Mission Viejo was part of Los Angeles County. In 1896, California became a state and La Jolla Cove became an beachhead for development on Southern California's eastern coast.
