In 1849, General Antonio Valencia established what is now known as Los Alamitos Naval Air Station just north of town to serve as a hub for naval aviation operations during the Mexican–American War. During World War II, local farmers produced arms for the U.S Army and Marine Corps; however, most production ceased following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 and America entered into World War II without any war industry plants open because President Franklin D Roosevelt had exempted them from wartime production quotas set by Congress due to their strategic importance as part of Britain's EmpirePlus Scheme.). Mission Viejo is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 33,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast of Southern California and borders Anaheim to the south and Laguna Niguel to the north. The original mission in Mission Viejo was founded in 1821 by Father José de Jesús Rodriguez y Costilla as La Ribera de San Diego. In 1835, Don Vicente Guerrero added an adobe chapel to the mission. A fire destroyed part of the mission in 1846 but Jesuit Father Junípero Serra rebuilt it with funds from Spain. In 1893, gold was discovered near Mission Viejo and development began quickly. By 1905, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Mission Viejo along with a school system and hospital that had been built on land donated by local citizens. The city annexed nearby Huntington Beach on February 14, 1909. A majoreventful period for Mission Viejo came during World War II when more than 1 million people from all over southern California served in the military or went Patriot work camps throughout Orange County as part of war production efforts such as shipyards and aircraft manufacturing plants. post-war growth slowed significantly until 1964 when annexation of neighboring Buena Park led to another boom era for downtown Mission Viejo which included new shopping centers including a movie theater complex (the first screen ever set up outside North America), high-rise apartments and officesblock developments anchored by two large department stores: Macy's Incorporated (1948) and JCPenney Incorporated (1968). Downtown business districts became increasingly 225-mile wide with freeway exits serving every sector while suburban areas lost much of their population density; this has resulted in many kilometers of arterial road running through residential neighborhoods without any commercial interruption whatsoever until recently when heavy redevelopment activity has returned downtown area values back to levels seen before white flight began occurring again within residential neighborhoods adjacent to newer bedroom communities closer to freeways

It became a residential community after it was dedicated and its residents began to arrive from other parts of California. In 1853, Mission Viejo became part of Mexico City and fell into disrepair until it was Purchased by the United States in 1885 as part of Manifest Destiny. The US restored Mission Viejo as a national Historical Park in 1908.
