Navy Deployed Gift History in Mission Viejo, California began with the donation of a torpedo boat to the city in 1948. The USS Ponce (AO-10) was donated to the city by Commodore Arthur J. Radcliffe and delivered on October 22, 1948. The Navy also gifted three submarines in 1959, 1961, and 1963. The USS Lassen (DDG-1) was donated to the city by Admiral John W. McCain in 1984 and served as part of the Harbor Defense Force until 1992 when it was decommissioned and scrapped. A number of other vessels were donated over time including: HMCS Pioneer (CVA-4), HMCS Protecteur (CVA-7), HCDS San Pedro Bay (DDS-2), MCAS Point Mugu (LHA-3), HSV(R) Tigre (LPH-8), MV(R) Samaritan (HMS Victory). In 2006, Mission Viejo announced that they would be donating a new destroyer to the city called "Eagle" which is currently being built at Los Angeles Naval Shipyard. She will be dedicated on September 10th, 2019 and will serve as part of the Harbor Defense Force for many years to come.

Mission Viejo is a small city in Orange County, California, United States. It is the namesake of Mission Viejo Historic District, which encompasses some 154 buildings and structures dating from 1847 to 1976. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The city of Mission Viejo was founded on November 8, 1847 by Rancho San Vicente de las Flores families as a dry goods trading post at an elevation of above sea level near what is now Industry Valley Road. The mission's first pastor, Father Fernando Rivera y Campos assigned Englishman James Fenton to lead the community's religious services and distribute food to the low-income residents who lived around the missions in Adobe Valley. In 1850, Juan Bautista Aguilar became pastor at Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles (founded 17 years earlier), and soon after began construction of a larger church and convent atop an adjacent hillock. On October 14, 1851 Aguilar sailed his ship "Los Angeles" up Channel Islands Bay to land at Point Santa Cruz about 12 miles (19 km) south of present-day Mission Viejo; he had intended to transfer worshipers from the smaller missions in that area to Morelos Chapel on missions Concepción Laguna and Loreto Hills but instead landed them at San Vicente de las Flores for transportation back home across Channel Island Bay. With no other site available for their new religious center due to development nearby by rancho owners, Father Rivera y Campos selected a location within one mile (1 km) of his original homestead on November 8th whereupon work began on both churches—the first built in California—and a town was born. Although it only lasted until 1856 when Father Rivera y Campos resigned due to illness followed by natural disaster with floods accompanying typhoons Paulyn and Zenobia that year - including extensive damage done to several homes - Missions Valdez (1857), Guadalupe Victoria (1858), Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1860), Don José Cabrillo (1862) were all completed within two years despite difficulties encountered building over sheer cliffsides with exposure directly onto Missions Creek bed which caused frequent flooding during heavy rainsstorms. By 1870 there were 10 mission stations operating out of Mission Viejo with 313 resident priests serving 583 lay people under eight pastors... In 1896 Revolver magazine designated Mission Viejo as one of '10 most beautiful places in America'. Mission Viejo experienced its heyday during World War II as American forces used it as a major supply depot for ammunition storage north inland from Los Angeles County until May 9 1945 when Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in Hiroshima bombing days later; many American servicemen returned home having left their equipment behind providing meatless meals for local troops during their absence while also aiding morale efforts locally among Californians eager for war reparations following Japan's attack portended more countrywide humiliation than just America experiencing before Pearl Harbor... As technology progressed throughout the 20th century much demolition took place taking down large numbers of historic buildings making way for new housing developments often without any consultation or notification whatsoever leading sometimes accusations againstLBJ's Administration over perceived disregard towards historical assets subsequent presidents have made since leaving office... A total programmable digital recorder system has been initiated into operation immediately surrounding downtown/mission areas allowing complete video & audio recording & transcription NOTE: Most public records still remain unrecorded even after 50+ years???
Mission Viejo was founded in 1795 by Franciscan friars as a mission for the Cahuilla people of Southern California. The original mission was destroyed in 1821, but a new one was erected on the same site and named after Saint John The Baptist. In 1844, missions were relocated to what is now downtown Los Angeles, and Mission Viejo became an independent parish. On May 25, 1925, it merged with other nearby parishes to become the present-day city of Los Angeles.
