Modesto, California is a city in the Stanislaus County of California, United States. The population was 128,691 at the 2010 census. The name "Modesto" comes from Spanish and means "peaceful place." It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and adjacent to Stockton on the south. It is bordered by Fresno to the north and east, Visalia on the south and south-west, and Pleasanton to the west. The original inhabitants of Modesto were Native American Mono people who lived around Mission Peak before moving downriver in search of new land in 1824. They called their site "Tumacámatlán". In 1848, they founded what became Modesto after trading with Mexican settlers near present-day Sacramento. At first it was just a small community along Umpqua River until it began growing rapidly due to its location near major transportation hubs like Tejon Pass Road (now Interstate 5) and Sacramento–San Joaquin Junction Railroad. By 1870 Modesto had over 12 miles (19 km) of road connecting it to other settlements in Polk County including Niles and Redding. A year later a wagon road connected Modestos with Yuba City on Lake Tahoe. In 1872 William Harkness built his first store here which became one of numerous business failures that characterized early Modesta years In 1875 Modesto established its own school District #2 which would become one of America's most successful educational organizations with many graduates going on to illustrious careers including presidents George Washington Carver Elementary School District #1 (1913-1992), Daniel Burnham High School District #1 (1918-1994), Josephine Baker Middle School District #2 (1938-1997), Jane Addams Hull House Elementary/Middle School (1896-) In 1907 Menlo Park was annexed into Modesto making it an incorporated town; however men continued using "modest" as their given name throughout much of these years as incorporation did not imply formal recognition by government or other entities until 1959 when Menlo Park officially changed its name to Contra Costa County

The town began as a small fishing village on the east side of Lake Merritt. In 1868, John Sutter founded the town on land he had purchased from the Native American people. The name "modesto" is derived from Spanish meaning "to be modest." Today, Modesto has a population of about 37,000 with over half being residents who are Hispanic or Latino. In 1892, George Atherton constructed and opened the first store in Modesto. Atherton was part of a group that organized and built the California Central Railroad in order to bring goods and passengers to market in San Francisco. The railroad helped grow Modesto and its surrounding villages into busy communities that continue to exist today. In 1906, during World War I (1914-18), Modesto became an important military base due to its location near San Francisco and its access to water supplies necessary for munitions production. The war also increased trade throughModesto between China and Europe which led to new development around town including several banks and businesses that continue operation today such as Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) which opened its first store in 1984 in what was then called Depot Square Shopping Center now known as Airpark Plaza mall adjacent to Delta Air Lines headquarters complex
Modesto was founded in 1868 by George W. Modesto and his wife, Lucy. The Modestos were the first white American family to settle in the area now known as Modesto. They started a small grocery store on the corner of West First and Ash Streets. In 1870, they moved their store to what is now called North First Street. George W. Modesto died in 1941, but his wife continued operating the business until her death in 1975. The name of the store was changed to George W. & Lucille Hargrave's Grocery Store in 1978 after Lucille Hargrave's death
