Every year, the Modesto Army National Guard conducts a "Gift from the Gov't" celebration. This event is an opportunity for members of the military to express their gratitude to the government by giving back something unique or valuable. Over time, there have been many different types and sizes of gift items donated to the National Guard during this annual event. One of the most common donations made by members of the military are items related to soldiers and their families. These include clothing, toys, books, radios, and more. The most recent "Gift from the Gov't" celebration was held in October of 2018 and featured over 60 different items donated by members of the Modesto Army National Guard! The history of Modesto begins with Captain John Sutter who arrived in 1847 and became one of the first white settlers in what would be known as Northern California. He founded Rancho San Joaquin which included land that now includes Modesto. The grant was given for $2,500 which was later increased to $10,000 after Sutter's death in 1859. Over time, other pioneers arrived and began cultivating the land including James Wolkhorst who built Wolkhorst City on his farmstead in 1850 and Charles Goodyear who established Goodyear City in 1861.
