The California coast guard has been providing service to the area since 1915. The original Coast Guard Station in Modesto was built on the current site of Naval Air Station Fallon in 1923. In 1951, the station was relocated to its present location on Point Reyes National Seashore. The Coast Guard’s mission is "to safeguard our state's waters, airspace and economy." During World War II, the Coast Guard manned both fighter and bomber squadrons as part of the USAAF. These units were later re-allocated to RAF Hornchurch where they played a key role in Allied air strategy during the war. In 1961, after more than 50 years of service, the old Fallon facility was decommissioned and replaced by Naval Air Station Fallon (NAF). When NAF opened its doors it became an operational center for helicopter aviation operations within Navy Central Command responsible for all naval aviation activities along California's coast from Monterey Bay to San Diego County. In 1984, when Marin County acquired portions of Point Reyes National Seashore through a land swap with Santa Barbara County, NAF became an integral part of that county's park system. Today, NAF operates three helicopter pads at Point Reyes - one near Sausalito and two just south of town - as well as a harbor buoy staffed by helicopters which patrols the海岸中心区。 Today's Coast Guard Cutter fleet includes 16 vessels including six attack submarines and four mine warfare vessels capable of engagement against enemy ships or submarines up to 10 feet long x 2 feet wide class; twelve lifeboat/lifejackets; eight rescue boats totaling twenty-six tons displacement; eight coastal patrol vehicles; six oceanographic research vessels; one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron support vessel; one advanced sonar squadron support vessel; five marine weather stations dispersed throughout various habitats throughout Santa Cruz County .
