In 1865, he opened up his own roasting house which is still active today. AngeloMariani continued to sell his beans until he passed away in 1921. This event marked the beginning of a long tradition of making and selling high-quality fresh roasted coffee products in Modesto. The following year, another pioneer set foot in Modesto – Gustavus Adolphus Ewing Jr. He had been interested in starting his own business since he was a young man, and after hearing about AngeloMariani's death decided to give it a try himself. Ewing soon became well-known within the coffee industry for his intense roastings and innovative methodsologies. His establishment eventually grew into one of the most successful roasters on Long Beach Island – known for its exquisite flavor profiles and amazing texture。 In 1957, Alfred Peet opened up his own grocery store on Main Street in Modesto – home base for many years until it closed down around 1995).
