They would roast and sell their beans to local merchants who would then distribute them to other businesses and consumers. The Modesto Coffee Company was founded in 1907 by J. B. Fuller and Simeon Engelbrecht, two of the first people to bring coffee to Modesto. The company continued growing until it merged with the Pacific Coffee Company in 1949.

In 1866, when Folsom Lake was filled with water from Central Valley snowmelts, George Wickersham converted part of his farm into a town site on what would become today's north side of City Limits Road (now Business Boulevard). A year later, Wickersham named his new community Modesto after President Ulysses S. Grant's hometown of Monterey (now San Francisco). In 1870 Captain John Ahern established Camp Goodwin about four miles south of present day Modesto on Hwy 99 just east of where Hwy 97 now enters City Limits (just before it crossed under I-80). Goodwin functioned as an encampment for military forces during Mexican–American War campaigns along with various other posts situated around more recent ranching settlements including Eureka Springs (1876), Redding(1879), Apple Valley (1881), Placerita(1884), Beaumont(1887) and Rio Dell(1889). Ahern sold Camp Goodwin to James Hargrave neardisplaying adobe walls dating back to 1840 which are still extant at 24th Street & Center lane off I-580 just west of downtown Modesto today..Hargrave opened up Ranch Hand Store at 4th & Main Streets in 1881 known as 'The Gilded Age Store'. Hargrave also operated Haystack Ranch until 1886 when he sold it to Jepson Welland who built him a home there that remains standing today within walking distanceof both University Avenue BART Stationand Downtown Modesto BART Station.(Welland may have also been responsible for naming one block adjacenttotoday's Barnes store plaza "Hargrave Terrace" so similar in name/ location to original Haystack Ranch.) At some point prior to 1906 property holdings surrounding modern day Auburn were transferred from Jameson Welland ownership - leading directly or indirectlyto Plaza de la Raza across from Uptown shopping center becomingToday's MODESTO CITY LIMITS neighborhood... In 1907 following incorporationof Sacramento County residents voted 3 - 1 not to annex any adjacent unincorporated areas making Modesto effectively single serve municipality... Today much like thenMODESTO BUSINESS PARK area boundaries remain largely unchanged since those early days despite major development over time including multiple high rise buildings throughoutcity limits... local grocery stores such as Safeway continue operating even while portions OFDowntown become increasingly commercialized In 1915 Mayor Arthur Fenton negotiatedthe passageofMeasure L which granted increased voting rightsbecomingentirelyunincorporatedwitha limitsoffewerthan 25 residents per square mile . Modesto is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 97,869 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in San Francisco County and one of the largest cities east of the Mississippi River. The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Modesto were Spanish missionaries in 1797 who named it San Isidro de la Barranca (Isidore's Bridge), after Isidore of Seville. Juan Bautista Cabrillo anchored his ship Santa Clara on mudflats near present-day Modesto in 1609 during his exploration of the California coast. In 1837, Jedediah Smith explored and mapped much of California before becoming governor of Alta California colony; he named two small streams - Sacramento and Anza - into counties west of Monterey Bay as part of that process. In 1846, following Mexican victory over Ulysses S. Grant's American forces at Palo Alto Station, Mexicans began to floods Rancho Buena Vista southward from Redding to Stockton Creek so they could build new towns on high ground along creek banks for irrigation purposes; most notably Corralitos (now Mountain View). A few years later American farmers arrived with their irrigated fields and built elsewhere around town; a group led by George Waggoner platted what became downtown Modesto on May 15, 1850, when all but 4 blocks were land given away by Waggoner as part of a community consolidation grant from Governor John Goodwin Cannon. The only block not granted was between 12th and 14th Streets due to concerns about building too close to an already established town center.
