Many people believe that it is this unique mixture of small businesses and high-profile companies that makes the Marina District one of Silicon Valley's most vibrant cultural areas. The Modesto Marine Museum was founded in 1967 by Edward J. Clements, a retired1967 Superintendent of Schools in the City of Modesto. The museum is housed in the old Central School building on Depot Street which was built as a school in 1876 and became the Modesto County Courthouse in 1912. In 1969, the city donated land to the museum for its permanent collection and administration which included an exhibit hall, gift shop and research library. In 1973, the county gave us acres of land on Railroad Avenue near Railroad Road for our marine science museum which opened in 1978. The current structure was completed in 1984 and includes a large deck above the river that offers views of both sides of the river, an interactive exhibits area with natural history displays from around California and worldwide,gallery spaces with art from local artists,and a theater/concert hall used for classes and events such as music festivals.

Modesto is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 66,815 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Stanislaus County and the third-largest city east of Lake Tahoe. The Ohlone people who inhabited this area for centuries before Europeans arrived were hunter-gatherers. They built their first villages on small hills about eight miles north of present-day Modesto. The first permanent European settler in what is now Modesto was John Sutter, who founded Sutter City between 1851 and 1856 on land he had acquired from Mexican landowners as part of his Rancho Jurupa venture. Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1769, became a major center for trade with Native Americans and provided food for Mission San José de los Amigos (later Santa Clara) farther west. The missions produced some of California's earliest written language and literature including "The Recollections of Alta California" by José Altamira in 1834. In 1821 Colonel George C Howard organized an artillery battalion called Company A under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Bridgwater to protect Mission Dolores from unauthorized incursions by Indians during the Mexican–American War. When war ended two years later, most soldiers returned home but Company A continued its patrols until 1827 when it disbanded because of lack of funding. In that year Captain George Simonds started summer residence at El Dorado Hills on behalf of the Board of Regents for University Extension which then included Modoc County. Simonds purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) near modern day Modesto from Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1840 and named it Rancho Rodeo after himself and his fatherland Rancho Sacramento which included much today's Silicon Valley foothills immediately southward along Interstate 5). He also began establishing townsite sites within ranch boundaries: Placerita (near modern day Dixon), Marysville (now Belmont), Colusa (now Visalia), Moscone Center (now Oakland), and Novato (). He sold most or all these townsite properties to various individuals and businesses over time becoming one of Northern Californias largest landholders including building many homes near modern day downtown Modesto overlooking Millbrae Creek originally developed as a dairy farmstead known as Donnybrook Farms & Creamery where several landmarks still extant such as Donnybrook Dairy Barn & outbuildings are located today across Millbrae Creek from downtown Modesto
MODESTO was founded on May 10, 1849 by the brothers Jedediah and Solomon Smith. The town was named for John Modesto, an early settler in the area. The first post office opened in 1851. In 1907, Modesto became the second city in California to have a electric street lighting system.
