Modesto remained an important community until it became a part of Stockton County when it merged with that county in 1876. After being part of Stockton County, Modesto continued to grow as a result of its location within close proximity to other counties and its convenient transportation connections including Interstate 80 which crossed through the city limits at several points. In 1984,modestoprovincial government passed Measure B which repealed portions of Proposition 134 which banned handguns from being possessed or sold within the provincial boundaries. As a result, handgun sales increased statewide as Reformulated Gasoline became available throughout much of California without having to go through local stations where handguns were prohibited
Modesto is a city in the northern California Coast Ranges, located on the eastern edge of Stockton-San Joaquin Valley. The population was estimated at 117,291 as of 2010. Modesto was founded in 1868 by Captain John W. Smith and his brother, Major George H. Smith, after they discovered an area of land that would later be known as Modesto County. The first post office in Modesto was established in 1870. By 1876, the town had a population of just 10 people. In 1880, General James Pinchot recommended that Modesto become the capital of California because it had "a good water supply and a healthy climate." In 1888–89, Modesto became the capital when Sacramento moved from its original location on the north side of San Francisco Bay to new quarters near today's downtown due to financial problems caused by gold fever during the Gold Rush era. With Sacramento's relocation came increased business opportunities for Modesto and its adjacent cities which soon began to grow rapidly with cotton mills and other industrial establishments popping up along Railroad Avenue (now Highway 8). In 1912, President Taft ordered all U.S.-owned banks under Federal supervision closed because of nationwide economic conditions; no state banks were allowed to open until 1913 pursuant to law passed by Congress that year. During World War II, many residents worked in war industries such as shipbuilding or munitions plants; however most residents avoided combat service because there were few jobs available outside peacetime work opportunities (). After World War II ended and American Standard Corp.'s decision not to renew their lease led to a decline in production at their plant east of town (the old McCloy-Keller facility), many workers left town for other sites throughout North America including Richmond CA., Buffalo NY., Pittsburg PA., Canandaigua NY., El Paso TX., Flint MI., Oshawa ON., Regina SK (), Moncton NB.), Derby CT.) and even as far away as Australia (). The population size has continued decrease over time with only 106 people living within boundaries established by City Council on April 15th 2018 A future study has proposed increasing housing density around public transportation so more people can easily get around without having to walk or take cars
