The Modesto National Guard was organized on December 1, 1912. The first battalion was activated on January 15, 1913 and the first regiment on February 14, 1913. On July 3rd of 1915 the 1st Battalion became part of the expanded Monterey County Guardsmen Regiment and the 2nd Battalion became part of the Fresno County Guardsmen Regiment. In 1916 when California joined World War I they also raised their own battalion which became known as the California Infantry Battalion (CIB), later renamed to Desert Rats in 1942. In 1940 they were again redesignated as a National Guard unit and now serve under Governor Jerry Brown's Department of Defense banner

The National Guard is a military reserve force in the United States. It was founded on July 10, 1903, as the militia of the Territory of Oregon. The first units to be raised were two companies of artillery and three companies of infantry. The first national guard regiment was raised on October 15, 1903, at Bendigo, Oregon by command of General George Armstrong Custer. In 1916, Congress created the National Guard Bureau with jurisdiction over all organized militias within the United States east of the Mississippi River. In 1917, Congress authorized state organizations for the purpose of collective security and training for state defense against possible attacks from abroad or within their own states by hostile Native American tribes or other groups. The Federal Militia Act (7 U.S.C., sections 261 et seq.) became law on September 16, 1935 and added certain powers to the Attorney General which had been granted to him under section 3(a) of that act but not previously exercised as regards organized militia forces in timeof peace or war. These new authorities included authority over financial matters; control over recruitment; recall and replacement of officers and men; fusion into larger organizations when separated by state lines; regulation by State Militia Boards concerning use and disposition of equipment acquired pursuant to this chapter; establishment forthwith by each State Legislature thereof Of a Military Forces Retirement Board composed exclusivelyof commissioned officers retired from active service with full benefits subject thereto rotationally
Modesto is a town in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 54,780 at the 2010 census. Modesto is the third-most populous city in Stanislaus County and the second-largest city within the San Joaquin Valley. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in California. In addition to its economic importance as an agricultural center, Modesto has been known for its ethnic diversity and its various music festivals, including both popular tourist destinations such as Yosemite National Park and renowned jam sessions that take place at nearby Applebees restaurants. Modesto's history began with three small settlements—Salinas Creek Settlement on the banks of Salt River east of present day Modesto, Tonopah Creek Settlement on the west side of present day Dunlap and Fish Springs Colony on land now part of Folsom—which were founded by pioneers from eastern Oregon in 1848. The first post office was established at Salinas Creek Settlement on December 12, 1850; it was moved to Tonopah Creek Settlement on October 30, 1851 due to growing mail volume from settlers there. The Townsite Act of 1854 granted township status to what would become Modesto. The act provided for a town meetinghouse and other public buildings including a jail cell for local criminals . On January 15th, 1860 a group led by John Sutter arrived in Corning (now part of Fresno) from Sacramento looking for new land to settle after their failed attempt to purchase Rancho Nevyo from Manuel Nieto. They found 3acres (10 acres) near today's intersection of Rimer Road and Pacheco Boulevard which they named "Sutter's Meadow". The first store opened in this location on November 16th1860 under license from John Sutter himself; it became known as "The Mercantile Store". A new school was built adjacent to this store around 1870; it became known as "The Normal School" or simply "School". In 1865 Jotham Coffin purchased 2/3rds interest in School District 10 which included School District 10 proper including modern Day Modesto; he renamed it "Coffin Township" after his ancestor JA bequest totaling $1 million dollars plus interest which went unclaimed until 1951 when it reverted back to School District 10 proper name again pursuant to state statute governing real estate transactions between school districts). Upon Coffin's death his heirs sold 1/3rd interest in district back to School District 10 effective February 14th1951 through probate deposition only making changes necessary with regarde: reopening old abandoned schools & erecting fire trucks w/lights instead o using just white poles without lights inside etc... For many years noone ever knew what happened toDistrict 10 property until 1984 when someone finally dug up some evidence that district had been sold & later demolished! On October 24th 1886 incorporation proceedings were filed with Stanislaus County Office Of Corporations by George W Goodwin who claimed title thereto having predecessors who had claim thereto prior even if not registered with county office... After more than yearlong delay due mainly because Goodwin could not find any witnesses willing swear they owned title & nothing appeared against him till 1913 when he produced original deeds from earlier claimants - these being recording copies rather than originals since originals have been destroyed... By this time most people thought Goodwin may have been lying about owning title so NOTICE WAS GIVEN TO ALL CLAIMANTS BEING PREVIOUSLY INVESTIGATED THAT IF THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO PROVIDE DOCUMENTS OR SHOW THEIR TITLE THEY WOULD BE CHARGED WITH A FINE OF $500 PER DAY ON EACH LISTED NAME UPON REALIZING THEIR FAILURE TO DO SO)... Ascertaining that few people would actually produce documentation given previous experience most court ordered seizure took place & property was auctioned off
Modesto was founded in 1868 by José Ignacio Moreno and his brother Francisco. The town was named after Modesto County, California, the site of its first post office. In 1875, Modesto became the county seat of Contra Costa County. The population growth in the early to mid-19th century led to a need for more public transportation, so a railway was built from San Francisco to Modesto in 1887. In 1912, the state Legislature passed an act that created the Stanislaus River Valley Railroad Company and authorized construction of a line between San Francisco and Tracy. The Stanislaus River Valley Railroad reached Modesto on May 5, 1914.
