Modesto is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 68,814 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Stanislaus County, which makes up most of thewestern half of California and includes Modesto as well as its adjacent cities of Dixon and Manteca. Modesto has been home to various K-12 educational institutions such as Pacific Coast University and SRI International since 1879. In 1967, Apple Inc.'s headquarters were established in Modesto. The first European settlers arrived in 1768 by way of Beale's Fork on Umpqua River when Jedediah Smith was explorationiating for fur trappers. From here they explored much of present-day Modoc County before arriving at what is now downtown Modesto on April 12, 1837. David Teal was one of these early pioneers who founded the townsite around an old mission called "Eagle Rock." The first post office opened in 1839 under the name "Telegraph Hill." A new courthouse was built in 1840 and named after John Cranch, then a Senator from Illinois). The town became an agricultural center with many farms near where modern day Dixon lies; however it did not become a significant commercial center until after World War II when industrial production increased nearby and large numbers of workers commuting into town began to build western suburbs such as Dixon and Manteca (now part of Stockton).
