Monrovia is a city in the southern California region of Los Angeles County. It lies on the Monongahela River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown LA and 12 miles (19 km) northwest of USC. The population was estimated at 105,000 in 2010. Monrovia has been inhabited by Mono people for over two thousand years. The area now known as Monrovia was first occupied by the Tongva people before being annexed by Los Angeles in 1881. The name "Monroe" originates from this time period and was used to describe the area around what is now Monroe Street and Third Street in downtown LA. The city most likely began as a small town named after General James Monroney, who fought against Mexican forces during the Alta California Campaign of 1846, or possibly Captain John Sutter's rancho situado de San Bernardino en Comanche Creek which he acquired in 1847-48. In either case, Monrovia became an urban center with growth following annexation into Los Angeles County in 1888. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Camp O'Hare located adjacent to present day Beverly Hills Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard near Western Avenue; it is now part of University of Southern California's campus. A few hundred Japanese American residents also lived within walking distance of downtown monrovia during that time period with little impact on local community life other than occasional interactions between residents and their incarceration-related neighbors living nearby on foot or bike
