The first commercially successful roaster in Monrovia was Fazio & Brothers who opened their business in 1925. After World War II, many new roasters established themselves in downtown Monrovia including Starbucks which opened its doors on Main Street in 1977. From 1997-2001, Nestle Enterprises (now known as PepsiCo) owned most of town before they sold it to developer Angelo Renda for $30 million cash and 2 million acres of land adjacent to Interstate 5. The new development included several high-end hotels and retail stores as well as an arena that would host professional sports events such as basketball, soccer and football games over the years.
