Monrovia is a city in California, United States. It is the seat of Mono County and the largest city in Kern County. The population was 71,827 at the 2010 census. Monrovia is located on the San Joaquin River and its namesake comes from Spanish meaning "Valley of Many Trees". The first people to live in Monrovia were the Ohlone tribe who hunted game near present day downtown. In 1836, Rancho Los Palos Mexican land grantee Josiah Beale founded a small town called Beale's Station on what is now West Side Street. Beale named his new settlement after Captain John Monckton, Rear Admiral commanding British forces at Alta California during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1872, Ulysses S. Grant purchased Rancho Los Palos from Josiah Beale for $4,000 (). Grant renamed itMonrovia after General John Custer who fought with US cavalry under General Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War (). The town site was returned to Josiah Beale in 1888 when he sold his interest to Hiram Bingham (). In 1903, following completion of Southern Pacific Railroad's mainline through central Kern County, many settlers began moving into Monrovia from nearby towns such as Bakersfield and Stockton because of its close proximity to railroad tracks and good agricultural prospects. Businesses opened up quickly and by 1907 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Monrovia including several banks and grocery stores. By 1912 most residents had relocated away from central business district due to poor environmental conditions caused by irrigation water runoff that polluted rivers bordering downtown. On November 5th 1913 Mayor Samuel Wrigley announced that City Council had voted 3-1 to annex portions of neighboring Stockton into Monrovia for a combined population of 25 thousand people (). At this time all but two nonresidential buildings withinmonroviana were built by local citizens or their families for use as government offices or schools; these buildings still stand today including City Hall which replaced an earlier building erected in 1865 by James Hutton ()

The first buildings that were erected in what became Monrovia were seen as temporary settlements since there wasn’t enough space for them all on the newly opened land. The town quickly grew and by 1861 had a population of 564 people living in 49 buildings or “houses” according to historian David Sanger. By 1870, the population had reached 1,313 people and by 1880 it had grownagainto 2,509 people livingin 133 buildings or “houses” accordingto historianJohn Tuveson Jr.. In 1912-1913 there was a severe drought which caused many residents to leave their homes; however they soon returned after rain started arriving from Santa Clara County through irrigation systems brought over by farmers from Northern California who needed water for their crops during these difficult times.
