Monrovia, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 66,167 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and overlooks downtown Los Angeles. Monrovia has been known for itsadobe and Mission Revival architecture since 1879. The first people to live in what is now Monrovia were Native Americans called the Tongva. In 1821 they moved from their traditional home in inland Monterey County to what is now central Monrovia after being expelled by the Spanish government for cultural differences. The town was founded as part of Rancho Niguel land grant given to José Castro in 1839 by Governor Manuel Nieto of Mexico City as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following Mexican-American War victory over Santa Anna’s forces at Buena Vista Heights near San Diego. In 1848, about sixty years after Francisco Garza founded Rancho Niguel, another land grant, this time called Rancho Los Nietos, was issued to David Yeoman northwest of present day Monrovia east of Pasadena. Yeoman used it for grazing and farming until his death in 1905 when it passed through inheritance to his son John Yeoman who renamed it Monrovia after his maternal grandmother's birthplace Monterrey (now Mexicali). A post office was established at Monrovia on November 22nd, 1850 under the name “Nogales”; however no mail ever arrived there because transportation between Nogales and Monterey Bay was inadequate then or now In 1863 an agricultural company named Alameda & Nevada started shipping fruit from Visalia River into Southern California A local water tower became operational in 1902 but failed within a year due to high costs associated with plumbing improvements required for increased irrigation In 1912 Pacific Telephone Company began service with telephone lines extending southeast from Nogales upriver past today's Downtown business district
