The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is responsible for the care and display of U.S. Navy memorabilia located in Monrovia, California. Other recipients include Sailors William Pyle and Luther King Jr., who received Medals for their roles in the Watts riots; Petty Officer 2nd Class David Dyson whoreceived a Silver Star for his role combating piracy off Somalia;and Staff Sergeant Melvin Ladd whoreceived two Purple Hearts for wounds he sustained while fighting insurgents near Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Many navy members choose to wear their medals at home rather than take them with them when they leave service, but some do keep them until they die. For example, Petty Officer 3rd Class Alwynn "Tony" Kappenberger preserved his Silver Star after serving as its recipient aboard USS Dolphin (DD-830) during Operation Neptune's Spear - a mission conducted by United States Navy SEALs tasked with eliminating Taliban forces operating inside Afghanistan. When Kappenberger died age fifty-six from natural causes later that year, he was the only naval officer ever honored with a state funeral within California!

Monrovia is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 21,604 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of California, Riverside. Monrovia was founded in 1849 by Captain John Monaghan and his family as a ferry landing on the San Gabriel River. In 1885, it became an incorporated town with a population of 20 residents. In 1916, it became an independent city with a population of 100 people. The first post office opened in Monrovia on November 15, 1851. The last post office closed on December 14, 1959. The name of the city comes from Captain John Monaghan who named it after himself and his father-in-law Major General James Hahn (1814–1892). The history of Monrovia goes back to 1849 when Captain John Monaghan and his family arrived in what is now Kern County from Missouri looking for land to settle. They found suitable ground along the San Gabriel River and built their houseboat called "Nile" at present day's corner of First Street and Second Avenue South near where they would later build their own home called "Moses." With only 20 residents living there at that time,Captain John decided to form his own town so he could provide better services for all those living within its limits including merchandise sales on Saturdays open unto seven o'clock PM as well as other public functions such as firemen being available 24/7 during extreme weather conditions or when gold seekers were checking out new sites for prospecting purposes which also required access to water supplies! This pioneering spirit continued through many years untilCaptain John's death in 1901 leaving behind his two sons Josephine (born about 1868)and Augustus Davenport (born about 1870), both attorneys who soon began developing businesses within their towns which grew without interruption until 1945 when monsoon rains washed away most of downtown but not before Savings Bank building had been erected fronting First Street! A committee consisting mostly of citizens quickly rebuilt bank while advertising For Sale signs around town; this Committee became known officially as Saving Bank Committee! What followed was an uninterrupted period each year during which Main Street remained busy with commerce running side by side with school Board meetings presided over by Drs Cookson (1909), Witherspoon (1910), Gowen (1911) & Dodge(1920). After World War II brought more traffic than ever before due especially to air travel; streetlights were added throughout downtown making shopping very easy even though many stores were still run outta business because so few people could afford electricity back then! This led directly into one era characterized by increased crime rates because criminals felt comfortable knowing that no one would be looking for them since any lighted area made it easier for law enforcement officers to find them! In 1969 however; Mayor William Jantz took control following election results showing him winning against challenger George Weber 90%to 10%. Mr Jantz worked tirelessly trying establish government order; cleaned up streets, removed graffiti etc.; reducing crime rate dramatically although some families still experienced difficulty getting along because single parents couldn't support large families like they used too do today without resortingTo criminal activity
