In Montclair, California, the United States Air Force has a long and rich history. The USAF's mission is to protect America and its people from enemies abroad, both at home and overseas. The USAF was founded on December 7th, 1947 by President Harry S Truman as the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). It was disbanded on September 2nd, 1957 when all USAAF units were combined into the newly created Central Aeronautics and Space Administration. The USAF returned to active duty on October 20th of that year with the creation of the Tactical Air Command (TAC) under General Curtis LeMay. This organization had jurisdiction over all American fighter aircraft stationed in Europe and Asia. The TAC became operational on November 1st, 1949 when it activated Fifteenth Air Force which consisted of fighter-bombers based at RAF Lakenheath England. On September 3rd 1952 Third Wing HQ relocated again to RAF Marham Common Essex for operations against Communist Chinese forces during the Korean War. Finally Ninth Wing Headquarters moved from RAF Lakenheath to RAF Northaven in Scotland on January 16th 1953 for operations against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War which began two days later aboard B-52 Stratofortress bombers escorted by KC-135 Stratotankers supporting ground troops ashore throughout South Vietnam until it ended three years later with Nixon's withdrawal from Southeast Asia following his successful Tet Offensive operation known as "Operation Rolling Thunder". "Withdrawal completed; USA no longer engaged in war." On April 15th 1955 First Group Headquarters transferred back to Amherstburg Ontario Canada where it had been housed since 1942 when Second Lieutenant Clifford Berryman first served as Military Intelligence Officer with No 5 Group Battle Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force (No 4 MUFCA). Inactivated February 1945 due to lack of personnel during World War II while Major Reginald Capper commandeered an E-8D Harrier jet trainer squadron No 8 MUFCA flying out of Iwo Jima after Japan surrendered unconditionally on August 14th 1945 for use against Japanese Ryukyuan forces operating inside China proper including Operation Arakawa which resulted in severe losses for Emperor Hirohito's army including 199 killed or missing among a population estimated at 100,000+ . reactivated October 2nd 1947 under Brigadier General John Fenton who previously commanded No 3 MUFCA stationed at George Washington University before becoming Deputy Chief of Staff G-2( Plans & Programs) Division ArmyAir Forces Europe after theater commander General Hoyt Sinegal retired effective March 1946 upon return from serving as Commander Fifth U SArmy Command European Theater Of Operations (CENTCOM) - Western Pacific Area prior to taking up this assignment about one month later then becoming deputy chief until relieved by General LeMay who took command effective June 1946 having previously served concurrently with him as commanding general ArmyAir Forces Atlantic/NORAD responsible for Eisenhower Doctrine'ventertainment Program Section - Plans & Programs Directorate ArmyAir Forces Americas area adjacent thereto." The city was founded in 1887 by Captain James Irvine and his wife Anna Maria Borden Irvine. Anna Maria Borden Irwin was born on October 13th, 1847 in Alameda County, California. She was the daughter of John Horsfall Borden and his wife Lucy Ann (née Bailey). AnnaMaria Borden Irwin died on December 11th, 1924 at the age of 92 years old. Her husband James Irvine also passed away on December 11th, 1924 at the age of 82 years old. Montclair is known for its ethnic diversity and its support for local businesses and entrepreneurship. Montclair is a city in western New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. Montclair is the fourth-largest city in New Jersey and the second-largest city in Essex County. It is also one of five cities in New York City that are considered part of the Bronx metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Montclair were French traders who passed through the region on their way to and from Manhattan in 1624 and 1625. The area was part of proprietary territory of Mount Laurel Plantation until 1714, when it became part of Burlington Township under English rule. In 1836, Montclair was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature based on recommendations from Governor John Stevens. The town's namesake, General George Washington Irving, donated land to form its central square which still stands today (the Livingston Avenue side). In 1849, following further recommendations from Stevens and approved by the state Legislature, Montclair became a borough with voting rights; this position remained until 1902 when it was granted full borough status with voting rights by an act of the NJ State Legislature. During World War II, many Jewish families living in nearby Newark fled Germany for America because they could not get visas or other forms of protection during that time period due to anti-Semitism then rampant throughout Europe. Many Jews moved into what would become Montclair after being expelled from Newark/East Orange areas during those same years; within two decades most all but a few residents had left for better prospects elsewhere in America or abroad. In 1907, Montclair became an incorporated town and soon developed into a prosperous agricultural center.
