The Montclair-based United States Army's 9th Infantry Division deploys gifts to soldiers and family members stationed in Afghanistan every year. In 2012, the division gave a prosthetic leg to Corporal Jeremiah Doss from Company I (Lightweight), 1st Battalion (Langley) 15th Marine Regiment during Operation Neptune's Spear. This unique gift was seen as another way for the brigade to show its support for Special Ops troops in Afghanistan and also help with rehabilitation efforts after their return home. Montclair is a city in western New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. Montclair is bordered by Union County to the south and east, Paterson Township to the north, and Mount Airy Township to the west. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in 1764 by ship from England. They were led by Captain John Tryon who named their new home "Montclair." The first settler was George Washington's grandson Nicholas Trimble. In 1814, Major General James Kieft founded Kieftstown near what is now Montclair as a defensive outpost against Indian attacks. By 1825, Kieftstown had become an important post station on the road from Trenton to Philadelphia. In 1881, Montclair became an incorporated municipality with a vote of 2-1 over objection from Paterson Township officials because it would have allowed for annexation by that township into what was then considered a larger city. By 1901, most of what is now Montclair had been developed as single-family homes or townhomes and there were only 3 businesses in all of its 4 wards: one general store (owned by Ebenezer Brown), two stone churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian), and one schoolhouse (grades 1-8). However, due to civic activism led by local women such as Belle Starr Howe and Nellie Blythe Whiteheadmont—both natives of nearby Paterson—Montclair began reversing course in recent years and becoming more urbanized with ongoing development around its central square which has become known locally simply as "The Square." In 2008–2009, Mayor Geraldine Ferraro oversaw construction of two new public schools across from The Square; these buildings are currently being used as office space for Montclair's government operations while also serving as temporary housing for displaced residents during Hurricane Sandy season.]] In 2013–2014 Mayor Dawn Zimmer enacted ambitious plans to redevelop much of downtown Montclair starting with repaving streetscape along main arteries including Route 9W & 10W; this project received $358 million in federal funding making it one of America’s largest infrastructure investments ever made – coming on top of other major projects such as expanding I-95/I-78 interchange into downtown Newark Liberty Airport through State Routes 511 & 609; adding high speed rail connectivity between Newark Penn Station & Hoboken Terminal via the former Secaucus Junction line - creating an economic district totaling over 1 million jobs across 5 boroughs!
Montclair was founded in 1856 by George Montague and his brother, Amos. The town grew quickly because of its location on the network of wagon roads that connected Rancho San Ramon to the rest of California. By 1870, Montclair had a population of over 100 people. In 1876, the first school in Montclair was built and students started attending from nearby Livermore. In 1902, the Montclair-Atherton Railway was completed and transportation became available to the town from elsewhere in California. In 1917, Montclair voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city. The first post office in Montclair opened in 1861 and until 1907 it was called Atherton. On July 1, 1907,montclair became an incorporated city with a population of around 120 people. From 1909 to 1916, mayor Charles Waddell served as both Mayor pro tempore and City Councilman; he is also recognized as the father of modern dayMontclair City Hall which was built between 1915 and 1917). During World War I (1914-18), local businesses donated materials for use by military personnel stationed at Camp Parkside outside of town; these camps were used as training grounds for American troops during World War I. In 1922,montclair firemen responded to a call for help when a house on Maple Avenue caught on fire; they found five children inside who had been burned alive brought into the burning home by their parents (the first known case of child endangerment in California). The tragedy led to increased awareness around child safety issues and helped spur legislation promoting better fire prevention measures across America. In 1932, Mayor Waddell ordered all public buildings be painted black so that they would stand out from other towns within Highway Patrol District 2; this order remains one of history's most famous initiatives celebrating community spirit throughout the years The following year saw another landmark event when President Franklin D Roosevelt made his inaugural address from atop Mount Vernon HS which then served as temporary headquarters for California State University at Berkeley during deliberations about setting up permanent campus facilities near downtown Berkeley .
