Montclair, California is a small town in Alameda County, California. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oakland–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montclair is located on the east bank of the San Francisco Bay, opposite Hayward and across from downtown Oakland. The Montclair mill was founded in 1854 by James Pemberton and others as a sawmill on Hwy 1 near what is now Interstate 580. In 1875, Isaac Meyer bought the mill and changed its name to Montclair Manufacturing Company. The company built a large flouring house and had two large rolling mills which produced flour for local markets as well as export to Japan and Europe. One of these two mills closed in 1922 but was reopened in 1984 as part of the Mills District Museum complex that still stands today on Orchard Road near Broadway Avenue (formerly US 50). In 1916, Amalgamated Edison Corporation established a power plant at an site just south of Montclair where they constructed four turbines to generate electricity for their neighborhood lights. Prior to this there was only animal power used by locals who would go out into the fields around town to get their hands on some scraps from nearby lumberyards or even worse if they were lucky enough to find some coal being burned down in elevation by farmers up high – something that still happens now more than fifty years later! In 1936, when East Bay Electric Company merged with Southern Pacific Railroad, Montclair became one of their plants along with other towns along Hwy 680 between Emeryville and Berkeley Heights due east of downtown Oakland (now I-580). At this time all electric companies shared property lines so each line stopped short near each other about 20 miles long! This made for quite a bit of engineering work getting all these lines interchanged without any major accidents or injuries which actually ended up costing us money since we had no way back then to insure our equipment! However it did result in promoting industry within our community since we pretty much became one big industrial area with lots of new businesses popping up here and there all vying for limited resources like water rights or access to raw materials like steel! Today's economy likes nothing more than competition so you can expect big things coming soon from both private industry as well as environmental groups who are working hard together trying keep our community healthy while also mitigating any negative impacts said development might have on our environment
Montclair is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. Montclair is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is east-northeast of Oakland. It is bordered by Fremont to the north, Hayward to the northeast, Livermore to the east and south, and Contra Costa County to the west. The first Europeans to visit Montclair were two Spanish traders named Hidalgo and Herrera who landed there on July 4, 1795 during their exploring expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. They were looking for a passage through Central America that would lead them to Mexico City. A week later they founded what became known as Rancho San Pablo de Montclair on a parcel of land that now includes most of downtown Montclair. The first post office in Montclair was established in 1827; it was moved from its original location near where Hastings Road now stands in 1828 because of an outbreak of smallpox which killed many people in nearby Hayward. The town's first settler was John Sloat who arrived with his family from Connecticut in 1839; he built a home on present day Second Street between Cherry Street and Broadway. In 1835 Jack London set up shop as aMerchant Marine captain at Portsmouth Wharf next door to his then-new gambling house on Bush streets (now part of Union Square). In 1840 he opened his own store on Third Street between High street and Broadway which became one of London's most popular tourist attractions until it burned down in 1865 oil rioting started nearby over tight regulations placed by British merchants operating outposts along America's coastlines seeking monopoly rights with respect to shipping rates
