Montclair, California is a small town located in Alameda County, California. The population was 10,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has a humid subtropical climate. Montclair's rich history includes its role as the capital of Contra Costa County from 1853 to 1857 and as the largest city in that county from 1865 to 1875. The first post office in Montclair was established on March 6, 1846, by James Hinton. In 1863, Montclair became an independent city with full voting rights. The first mayor was John Fenton. In 1915, Montclair annexed parts of East Oakland and began to build what would become known as "The City". The annexation process caused some controversy because it violated Oakland's zoning laws which barred cities from annexing areas east of MacArthur Boulevard. But Mayor Robert Moses later defended the move by saying that whereas Oakland could only offer services to residents within their borders, The City could provide services throughout Contra Costa County and beyond. Montclair achieved city status on November 3, 1916 when voters ratified an ordinance giving it this distinction by vote of two-thirds majority instead of a simple majority required for ordination into municipal government under state law at that time (the ordinance also granted city council power to levy taxes). Moses served as mayor until his death in 1951; he was succeeded by his deputy Harry Bridges who held office until 1964; then came George Argyros who held office until 1985; then there was Dianne Feinstein who served until she left Congress in 2013 after being elected senator from California’s 37th district. Montclair, California is a city in and the county seat of Alameda County, California. The population was 27,878 at the 2010 census. Montclair is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay Area and straddles both borders of Contra Costa County. It is also home to two universities: San Francisco State University and Diablo Valley College. The first Europeans to visit what is now Montclair were Spanish Missionaries in 1769-1770. They named it "Nueva Inglaterra" after their new homeland in Spain. The area then served as an agricultural region with dairy herds, but small settlements continued to form until 1851 when gold was found in nearby El Sobrante District. A rush began for land and by 1865, more than 4,000 people had stakes in land near the new shafts that would yield $2 per ounce (50¢ per pound). A post office called "Montclair" was established in 1851, and remained open until 1906. The town started as a simple farming community with a few homes and a schoolhouse. By 1860, there were over 50 homes and businesses along Third Street between Cypress Avenue and Elk Grove Boulevard; 1 mile east of where it currently stands lie some of America's earliest hydraulic fracturing wells! In 1870, three brothers - Wm., John & James Aspinwall - purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) southeast of present day Montclair from Joshua Latham for $5 million dollars ($120 million adjusted today). They soon realized that this piece of property could not be used simply for farming because it comprised an almost impenetrable hill which required intense drilling to extract coal seams under its surface. Instead they turned their attention to oil shalemining which became one of the largest oil discoveries ever made up until that time! Their discovery led them to name their company “Aspinwall Oil Company” after themselves – just like their predecessors who had discovered similar resources back East centuries ago! It wasn't long before they realized that this type of oil shale could easily be processed into tar sands or other petrochemical products using modern technology – something never possible before! And so began what would become known as the “Golden Age” for Aspinwall Oil Company! Although production initially ceased due to World War I hostilities (the war disrupted transportation supplies), production resumed shortly thereafter once peace returned; eventually reaching levels comparable those seen during World War II thanks largely to advances in refining techniques utilized by Shell Oil Company!! However following years of growth spurred by overproduction during World War II followed by difficult economic times during the postwar period – culminating with The Great Depression – Aspinwall finally went bankrupt in 1951!!! All told though AspinwallOilCompany produced some 350 million barrels (10% crude) worthOf oil from its reserves throughout its history; making it one among America's most successful petroleum companies!
Montclair was founded in 1849 as a small agricultural community on the east side of Montclair Hills, about two miles northeast of Newark, New Jersey. The first post office at Montclair was established in 1850. In 1854, the Erie Railroad built a line from Newark to Montclair and began shipping goods there. In 1860, the town became an incorporated village under the name of "Montclair." The town experienced some growth during World War II as many American soldiers stationed in nearby Newark brought their families to live in Montclair. In 1948, the US government merged all of Essex County into New Jersey and Montclair became part of East Orange Township. During the 1960s and 1970s, Montclair experienced rapid growth due to its location near Interstate 95 and its easy access to education and industry. This growth has led to increased congestion on Main Street, as people move into new homes while older ones are replaced by newer buildings.
