Montclair, California is a city located in Alameda County, California. It was founded on October 15, 1887 by the brothers Henry and George Montclair. The city was once home to the largest coffee roasting company in the world. In 1912, the company moved its operations to Riverside, California and began manufacturing coffee beans there. In 1967, two businessmen named Gordon Matta and Jerry slapdash bought out their parents’ business—Montclair Coffee Company—and renamed it Matta-&-Slapstick Coffee Company. They opened a small shop on Market Street near Union Square in Montclair with only 50 cups of fresh roasted coffee per day. By 1975, they had increased their production to 1,000 cups per day and opened a second store at 328 West 4th Street in San Francisco. Today, Matta-&-Slapstick Coffee Company continues to produce high quality fresh roasted coffees from Montclair into the 21st century. The company has been awarded multiple prestigious awards including being one of the "10 Best Places To Drink Tea" by Time magazine and being voted “Best Place To Eat” by readers of The New York Times Magazine.

Today's economy revolves around high technology companies which are headquartered within close proximity to downtown Montclair as well as other businesses which have relocated there over time including Philips Healthcare & Lighting; Intel; Apple Inc.; Facebook; Twitter; Netflix; Kaiser Permanente; Macy's Department Store; Sears Holdings Corporation.; Biotechnology giant Roche Holding AG.; Ford Motor Company., among others. With more than 4200 active businesses employing nearly 62% of the city's workforce - most concentrated within Downtown - retail sales make up only about one third of local employment but represent more than half of overall economic activity! The first coffee was picked wild near Mecca in Arabia around 800 A.D. Coffee was originally brewed as a beverage to provide energy for religious pilgrims during their long journey to Mecca. The Arabs were also the first to roast their own beans with modern equipment and methods. In 1795, Dutch traders discovered Java (now Indonesia) and began trading with its people. When they discovered that Java was rich in different types of trees and beans, they started to ship these goods back home to Holland. This allowed Java's merchants to become very successful because they could sell their products worldwide without having to worry about shipping costs or tariffs from other countries. This discovery led to two things- bigger markets for Indonesian coffees and new technologies for growing and harvesting beans! In 1898, Dutchman Jan Pieter Koffie founded the company Janssen & Co., which became one of the most famous roasters in the world today!Jan Pieter Koffie is considered one of the fathers of espresso! Koffie pioneered methods such as vacuum packaging (1914), automatic machines (1918), pre-packaged blends (1920), cold pressing (1925) and slow roasting (1935). He also developedorters such as Rotterdam Rollerskool (1947). Janssen & Co.'s success eventually gave rise to multinational companies like Peet's Coffee Company Ltd., United Arab EmiratesFCA Group Pte Ltd., Brazilian Coffee ASA etcetera which continue roast all over the world today!

By 1912, Montclair had a population of 10,000 people. In 1923, the city annexed the adjoining community of Paterson. During World War II, Montclair became a major military base for the United States Forces Pacific. The town's many factories produced materials for the war effort such as munitions and tanks. In 1951, Montclair voters passed an ordinance establishing an advisory committee to handle planning and zoning issues in the town. This committee would later become known as the Montclair Planning Commission. The City of Montclair merged with La Habra on July 1, 1988. As part of this merger, La Habra took over responsibility for public works in Montclair including water treatment, trash collection, streetlights and environmental maintenance.
