This gift is still considered one of the most memorable in Montclair’s history! The next big gift box came in 1870 when Mr. Halsey donated four crates of cigars to Montclair society. These cigars were hand-rolled by Mr. Halsey himself and were very high quality! The cigar box itself was made out of oak wood and had a gold leaf inscription reading “To His WIFE AND FAMILY FROM MR JOHN PEMBERSFIELD” inside an ornate case sat upon four brass legs*. The cigar box has become quite rare today and fetches up to $3,000*! In 1908, Mrs. Lillian White gave her husband George Washington Carver his first cookbook as a thank you for his many years of help while he cooked for President McKinley.* This beautiful book still remains one of the most popular gifts given during this time period! It consists of nearly 400 recipes*! In 1984, Mayor Edward Koch presented Montclair citizens with the world’s largest inflatable swimming pool (*at that time it was only 2 feet deep!). Montclair, California is a city located in northeastern Contra Costa County, California. The population was 57,824 at the 2010 Census. It is the largest city in Alameda County and the second-largest city in Contra Costa County after Richmond. Montclair is known for its large number of high-end condominiums and townhouses, as well as its agricultural industry which produces vegetables and fruits. The first European settler to come to what is now Montclair was Nicholas de Anza who arrived on horseback from Mission San Francisco de Asís on October 17, 1839. He founded a rancho called Rancho Anza East near present day Fremont Street and El Camino Real. De Anza's heirs sold their holdings in 1842 to Elias Howe and his brother George Howe who irrigated their land with water drawn from the Russian River. In 1868 John Sutter established a sawmill in present day Suttervilleowned by William Richardson that produced lumber until it closed operations in 1922. Sutterville began operations again in 1925 under new ownership but ceased again due to lack of demand for lumber soon after World War II ended; it reopened briefly in 1957 before ceasing all operations again In 1907, Montclair became an unincorporated community within Contra Costa County when it merged into the City of Concord. A year later the township of North Concord merged into Montclair Township when voters approved proposition #2 (1909), creating a municipal government with powers including zoning ordinances, fire control regulations, street cleaning/maintaining etc., as well as providing education and social services within municipalities while still remaining separate from Concord In 1934 two brothers named Harry Brownell opened up their own grocery store on High Street adjacent to modern day State University of New York at Berkeley Campus making them one of the longest lasting stores open during prohibition era America They were followed by another grocery store chain name Hometown Grocery which opened up shop next door to UC Berkeley’s Hayward Center between 1951-1953 In 1990 Alice Waters opened her restaurant early morning hours inside then vacated retail building at 10000 College Ave NW which shortly afterwards became home for Oakland’s famous 'Alice Waters House' nightlife scene In 2000 Trader Joe’s bought out Sonny Bono’s interest in Pleasanton grocers holding company that included many other small local businesses

Montclair, California is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The city was founded in 1849 by George Montague and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge. At the time of its founding, Montclair was one of the largest towns in Alameda County. In 1872, it became a city on its own and evolved into one of Northern California's most vibrant cities with a rich history. The first Europeans to visit Montclair were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party who explored Sonoma Valley in 1769-70. A year later, Spanish traders Félix Castro and Bartolomé de las Casas discovered the site of present-day Montclair while exploring the East coast of North America. Las Casas named the area Santa Clara because he found a small village there called Santa Clara del Oro (or "Silver Coin Village"). In 1848, George Montague arrived at San Francisco from Boston with his family to start a new life as an American settler in what is now known as Silicon Valley. He purchased 400 acres near where he would build his future home, known then as Stanford House or simply "Monterey." In 1850, he opened up what is now Montgomery Street between Center Street and University Avenue in what is now downtown Montclair. George's son John Wightman followed in father's footsteps and began marketing cattle around Sacramento to settlers living near Stockton before moving eastward to found homes at Antioch and Fremont Streets near today's Union Square Shopping Center. By 1870, George had sold all his land within sight of Stanford House for $2 million dollars making him one of America's wealthiest men at that time. Over time many other families also came to live within walking distance of their new homes - including those who would form The Montagues who bought land next door on Park Avenue in 1884 after selling their holdings at Antioch for over $10 million dollars! A second periodof growth followed during World War I when many local businesses turned wartime production into civilian activities such as munitions plants which employed thousandsanicd veterans throughout the war years until they were eventually shut down due to technology advances that made these industries no longer feasible two decades later! This period signaled another major change for this historically diverse community when women got involved especially throughBTW (banking institution) which had been established just across Market Street from Montgomery Street! Today much like then there are Many Cultural events taking place everyday bringing people together such as art shows/exhibitions; Indian dance performances; street theater productions; historical walks/trips etc... With all this activity & activity happening right smack dab Downtown you can't help but feel like it truly is "the town" back Home again!
Montclair was founded in 1856 by James Montclair and his brother, John. The brothers were both born in New Jersey. James Montclair became a successful businessman and politician in New York City. He moved to California in the early 1850s, where he started a clothing store on Market Street in San Francisco. In 1858, he married Emily Carruthers, who was also from San Francisco. The couple moved to Montclair and started a small grocery business. They later opened a millinery shop and set up home near the corner of 14th Street and First Avenue. In 1916, they sold their business to John Laughlin Jr., who renamed it Laughlin Clothing Company. Laughlin Clothing Company continued to operate until it merged with Macy's Corporation in 1949.
