The population was 21,711 as of 2010. Montclair's name comes from an Indian chief named Mojave who was killed there in 1827. The first European settlers in Montclair were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. The area now known as Montclair was part of Los Angeles County until it was merged with Orange County in 1907. In 1827, an Indian chief named Mojave was killed by a group of men led by José Garza while trying to cross the border into San Bernardino County from Mexico. After his death, his people buried him near present-day Highway 91 between Carlsbad Boulevard and Interstate 15. In 1892, gold was discovered at Sespe Creek northeast of Montclair and soon after a rush began for land around the creek bed. A store opened at what is now Fourth Street and I-15 in 1903 and quickly became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1911, when Riverside became a city, its police department moved from downtown to a new station on Third Avenue (now US 66) across from Town Hall Square where it still stands today. The old station served as headquarters for many years before being turned into office space for local businesses during recent renovations that took place between 2009 and 2013 As Riverside grew larger and more diverse than Montclair ever could have imagined – becoming home to both large manufacturing companies such as General Electric and Philip Morris International as well as smaller restaurants including Chipotle Mexican Grill – tensions between some residents over growing crime rates began building up again before finally erupting into violence on November 20th 2011 during what would become known as "The night Of."
