Montclair, California is an incorporated city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and it forms a small part of the East Bay Regional District. The first Europeans to visit Montclair were Spanish missionaries in 1821. José Castro founded a mission in what is now Montclair and named it after Saint Maurice de Jerusalem, commander of theArmy of Palestine during the Crusades. In 1845, gold was discovered near Mount Diablo and settlers began arriving from Northern California to claim land around it. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Montclair. This growth continued until 1906 when a fire destroyed most of the town center and left many residents homeless. The government created a new municipality called Richmond with jurisdiction over all but 3% of Contra Costa County while also giving control of municipal services to Richmond so that Montclair could be rebuilt as quickly as possible. In 1907, development started on what would become known as "The Alameda" neighborhood which included some of the earliest high-rise buildings in Oakland Valley. One reason for this rapid growth may have been Due to its location adjacent to two major railroads: The Central Pacific Railroad (later CSX) line running east-west between Oakland and San Francisco and then south along Interstate 880 (I-880) through Milpitas before terminating at Stockton; and Southern Pacific Railway line running north-south between Antioch and Pittsburg/Bay Point. This proximity allowed for easy access by both employers and consumers to goods available only a few miles away in downtown Oakland or Berkeley or far across town in San Francisco Peninsula towns like Fremont or Hayward
