Montclair, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 33,851 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Oakland County and the second-largest city on BART's North Coast Line. The Montclair Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991. Montclair was founded by John Sutter in 1847 as a small farming community near what is now downtown Oakland. Sutter and his brother Charles started a cattle ranch there in 1849 and developed it into an agricultural center with stalls for selling hay, milk, eggs and meat to local farmers. In 1862 Sutter donated land to build a public school; construction began that year and completed in 1865. In 1870s brothers Ezra Stroud (1838-1907) and George Fitzgerald (1851-1925) purchased land south of Montclair from Sutter; they became landowners there until their deaths in 1925 and 1954 respectively. They built up one of the most important agriculture families in Alameda County during this time period with holdings stretching from Milpitas to Pleasanton. In 1907 they donated all but 10 acres (40 hectares) of their land east of Montclair to create Lake Merritt which still covers much of that area today. As Lake Merritt grew larger during World War II it necessitated dredging operations which destroyed many homes along the shoreline; however over time many were rebuilt or replaced thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, foundations and governments including US Army Corps Of Engineers repairs/replacements funded under Operation Main Street program during 1942-1945 era During post–World War II years growth slowed due various economic factors such as high inflation rates following atomic bombing raids on Japan; however by 1990s Montclair had redeveloped considerably becoming one of fastest growing cities within United States . Montclair is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 20,498 at the 2010 census. Montclair is located in the eastern end of Contra Costa County and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the north, Pittsburg to the east, Eureka to the south-east andformerly Newark am NJ on its southern border. The first European discovery in what would become Contra Costa County was made by Captain George Vancouver on July 17th 1676 when he discovered "New Netherland" off of Point Reyes Peninsula. British explorer James Cook later explored this same area in 1770 and named it Staten Island after Sir Nicholas Vere de la Rue who had been sent by Queen Elizabeth II as an exploratory venture into North America. LaRue's expedition visited many sites including Point Reyes before returning home with reports of fertile land that could be farmed. In 1786 Mexican Captain Antonio Jose de Ulloa discovered evidence of goldmines near what would become Montclair when his ship Stopa passed through San Francisco Bay on its way from Vera Cruz to Mexico City viapoints near Sausalito and Petaluma. In 1821 Montgomery Rancho Adobe became part of Rancho San Leandro which also included present day Hayward and Livermore valleys including Montecito Heights, Kensington and Sycamore Hills. On February 14th 1848 William Richardson purchased Rancho Los Troncos from Manuel Nieto for $6,000 cash plus 8% interest annually payable over 10 years with no payment until 3 years after assumption which then became due back to Nieto if not met or paid off prior to final sale date set for May 1st 1851 under contract dated April 12th 1850 between Richardson heirs Lorenzo Richards (younger brother) & George Beall (father). This rancho lay within boundaries of present day Montclair Township limits until January 1st 1865 when it was transferred from Rancho Los Troncos into sections of Pittsburg Township also apportioned among Richards heirs upon their father’s death intestate; thence it passed thru probate to Lorenzo Richards who married Ida Hildebrandt therein December 15th 1903 & died intestate March 7th 1904 leaving behind 5 children: Lawrence A., Beatrice B., Clifford D., Irving S., Estelle L.. It should be noted that there were other claimants during these years including Augustus Pritchard who acquired portions adjoining Sanchez Valley but sold them all back before purchase was completed thereby resulting in disputed borders between Sanchez Valley & Contra Costa County - see map attached below Map showing all parcels involved

The city grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location within easy access of San Francisco andOakland. In 1914, Montclair became the first municipality in Alameda County to secede from Oakland and become an independent city. During World War II, the Montclair area played a significant role in the development of aircraft production at nearby Bay Area Air Force Base. In 1947, the City of Berkeley annexed part of Montclair; this annexation resulted in a combined population for both cities of 97,362 people. In 1990, Berkeley voters passed Measure D which doubledMontclair's size to 123 square miles (291 km2). On October 1st that year,1995 Voters approved Proposition B which created an annexing process for unincorporated areas east of Interstate 580 between Hayward and Fremont which would result in a new city with a population of 54,876 people. In 2000-2001 plans were made to demolish most of downtown Montclair as part of $405 million project called "Vision Zero" spearheaded by Mayor Frank Jordan and then-Sheriff Timothy Leary aimed at reducing traffic fatalities statewide by 2024
