Montclair, California is a small town located in eastern Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Montclair is home to Montclair High School which offers both public and private education experiences. It also has a branch of the Katella Library system. The first people to live in what is now Montclair were Native American traders and their descendants who came from the region around San Francisco Bay in the early 1800s. In 1859, part of Rancho Pastoria de las Aguas (later part of Oakland) was donated by John Sutter to James Buchanan Richardson as an agricultural colony called Richardson Rancho Seco. By 1865, most of the ranch had been sold off to become part of what is now Contra Costa County. In 1892, George Washington Carver bought some land east of present-day Montclair for $10 per acre and began developing it into a farming community known as Carver Village. The name references Carver's interest in agriculture as well as his intent to create a new society based on cooperation rather than individualism. In 1906, Carver donated additional land east of present-day Montclair to form Richardson Park which still includes portions that are today within the town limits of Montclair. It wasn't until after World War II that post-war growth started to take place in what is now Monteclaro Township due largely to military housing developments during World War II and subsequent construction programs at nearby Naval Air Station Alameda Island (now Hunters Point). As more people moved into these areas and businesses opened up, there was demand for schools and other infrastructure needed for such development sogrowth took hold throughout much of East Contra Costa County south of Interstate 80/I-580 including parts of Newton Highlands through Sterling Heights before spreading northward into unincorporated areas like Duncansville and Mt Pleasant Township until reaching its current boundaries near Catholic University Hospital in downtown Berkeley

Montclair was founded by George Montague in 1847 as a farmstead in what is now Eastmont Township. In 1850, Montague sold his land to John Fitzpatrick and other investors who erected the first post office in what became Montclair In 1863, following the Gold Rush and new arrivals from Nevada, settlers began to arrive in great numbers in what would become Montclair The town quickly grew into a thriving community with many businesses and residents. One such business owner was James Waddell who started an ice cream parlor called Waffle House which became one of town's most popular tourist attractions served free from May through October. In 1875, Douglass Hinton joined forces with James Waddell to open another successful business called the Cotton Mill which produced cotton goods for local retailers In 1876-77, two small schools were built: one for children and one for adults. These school buildings remain today as part of Montclair's historical legacy
