Montclair, California is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 362. The Montclair Naval Air Station (Navy station) was established in 1941 and currently serves as home to the United States Navy's Aircraft Carrier Strike Group (AASHG), Destroyer Squadron 38, Gunfire Support Squadron 9 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Group 5. The towns original name may have been "Newport" because the first post office opened in Newport Beach on May 25th, 1887. The current name honors Admiral George Dewey who served as Commodore of Pacific Fleet from 1898-1901 and later became Superintendent of U.S Naval Academy Education Department from 1902-1905. At that time, Commodore Dewey toured the naval academy and saw that it had not yet received its full complement of torpedoboats which would make it an effective deterrent against Japan. It was during this visit that Commodore Dewey made his famous speech before the class of 1903 about duty to country above all else which has stayed with American sailors ever since . In 1940 Commander John A Sutter relieved Rear Admiral Noel Kressin as commanding officer of NAS Montclair after Kressin's retirement due to illness or death; Rear Admiral Sutter had commanded NAS San Francisco from 1935-39 when he replaced Rear Admiral Wickhams who retired due to health problems caused by alcoholism; both commanders were career members of NAS Alameda where they had served since 1931.. After leaving NAS Alameda Rear Admiral Sutter became Commanding Officer First Fleet Atlantic Area USNR until his retirement in 1964 then assumed command Third Fleet USNR until he retired too due to ill health in 1977; while Commanding Officer First Fleet Atlantic Area USNR Rear Admiral Sutter is also credited with being one of the first people to fly an F4U Corsair into combat over Vietnam when flying off USS Enterprise (CVN-65) on October 7th 1965). After rear admiral sutton's departure there followed a vacancy until 1966 when Vice Admdr Donald L Goudreau took command but resigned after two months due to differences with higher levels within fleet over operations surrounding Operation Neptune Spear which disrupted traffic flow around San Diego Bay; Vice Admdr Goudreau then assumed command Fifth Fleet USNR under new leadership until he retired too due to health problems in 1984.. In 1987 Captain Joseph J Smith took command but only held office for three months before achieving brevet rank lieutenant commander and retiring soon thereafter having achieved many awards including being awarded a Legion d'honneur by President Reagan.. In 1992 Capt John B Wexler succeeded Capt Joseph J Smith taking over command for seven years prior thereto becoming sole captain upon Captain Wexler's promotion to rear admiral effective October 1st 1995... Since 1994 Thad L Brown has been Commanding Officer Fourth Fleet USNR... Finally since 2000 Maj James A Sampson has been commanding officer Fifth Fleet USNR... Montclair, California is a city located in Alameda County, California. The population was 43,853 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Alameda County after Oakland. According to the United States Census Bureau, Montclair has a total area of 26 square miles (71 km²), of which 21 square miles (59 km²) is land and 7 square miles (19 km²) (5%) is water. The first non-Native American inhabitants of what would become Montclair were two brothers who settled on Rancho San Pablo in 1815. They named their property "Monterey" after Mexico City and their ship carried supplies back and forth between Sacramento and Mexicali from 1816-1821. The first permanent European settler was George Harding who arrived in 1827 with his family from Norwich, England as part of the wave of English immigrants that swept through California during the late 19th century. Over time, other families followed suit including: Bancroft, Badenoch and Beardsley who built homes on lands grants by Governor Manuel Nieto; Earle who came over on the bark "Oso" in 1852; Houghton whose farmstead matured into what is now Beacon Hill; Hitchcock who bought land east of town in 1865; Levy purchase three years later; Valentine purchases an acreage northwest of town in 1868...In 1870 there were only five families living here: Harding, Valentine, Levy, Hitchcock and Narciso Sanchez...It wasn't until 1916 when Montclair's post office opened that residents began to build their own homes." Meanwhile back east in Oakland there was a similar wave of settlers arriving during this time period called theoakland Boomtown Developers which also included such luminaries as Cyrus Hamlin and Augustus Cooke Sr.. By 1880 there were more than 1 500 people living along Telegraph Avenue inside what would become downtown Oakland proper with businesses like Dennison's Department Store opening its doors for business just south of Broadway where Third Street meets Telegraph Avenue today. During World War II many local men worked on the war effort providing goods like Liberty Ships or munitions to ports all around California while others took up agricultural pursuits such as raising chickens or pigs on properties they had acquired or purchased near Lake Merritt or Contra Costa Counties within commuting distance for work or commercial purposes. The city was founded on October 15, 1852 by James Irvine and his brother-in-law, Charles Goodyear. Montclair became a town on January 1, 1854. In 1862, Montclair was incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000 people. On February 14, 1865, the United States Congress passed Joint Resolution No. 9 calling for the annexation of Montclair into New Jersey because its land border to that state was more than three miles wide. Because of this resolution and because New Jersey had not yet ratified the American Civil War Amendments providing for slavery in the Union (the amendment did not become effective until December 12th), Montcliffe joined the Union as part of New York County on November 8th 1861. Montclair experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to munitions plants and shipyards operated by General Motors Corporation (GMC). The city's main industry at that time was civilian aviation but also served as an important military base for GMC during World War II with Ford Motor Company being one such company. After World War II ended,GMC scaled back its operations in Montclair while other large companies continued to locate there such as AT&T and Intel Corporation. Today much of what made GMC so successful during wartime has been lost in time however many pieces remain including their downtown skyline which is now home to a number of businesses and restaurants including several high-end shopping malls
Montclair was founded in 1847 as a small, rural community on the edge of Los Angeles. It quickly became one of the most prosperous cities in California, and by 1860 it had reached its population peak. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Montclair experienced several dramatic swings in its fortunes. In 1902, it became the site of one of America's largest lynching incidents when a group of white men rounded up black men and put them into vans and drove them to a remote location near Montclair. There they were burned alive. Two years later, however, Montclair's growth continued apace as new businesses opened up and poverty began to diminish. By 1912, however, Montcliffe had lost all its economic significance and was described as "a ghost town." In 1924, Montclair was renamed after George Washington Carver – an American agriculturalist who had helped create many of California's major crop fields – in order to emphasize its role as an agricultural center. However, despite this renamee-ship attempt at reviving the city's economy (and succeeding for a time), Montclair struggled through the 1930s and 1940s with high levels of poverty and crime.
