Montclair is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded in 1887 by brothers George and Alfred Montclair, who opened a general store. The city's first post office was opened in 1903. Montclair has a population of just over 6,000 people as of the 2010 census. The city is known for its production of tactical coffee, made from beans that are roasted near-by at the Montclair Coffee Company. Montclair Coffee Company was founded in 1984 by Dick Costolo and John Muller. The company produces more than 2 million pounds of coffee each year, making it one of the largest producers of tactical coffee in the United States. In addition to its production facility on State Route 8 near Pottersville, Montclair also owns and operates a mill on Highway 101 east of town that makes world-class espresso drinks such as Vento Antico and Mocha Grande. Today, Montclair Coffee Company remains an independently operated business with strong roots in community support that continue to make our products available at local retailers across California and beyond.

After years of debate over whether to incorporate as a municipality or remain an unincorporated community separate from Modesto, Montclair incorporation occurred on November 3, 1916. Montclair is located at (37.609609°N 122.8695°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The north boundary runs along Lake Merced to Ulysses Blvd., then east along that street past Midway Elementary School and down into Alma Street before turning south onto High Street again towards Main Street; this line forms what is now called "the border." The south boundary follows Alma Street southwest until it meets Berryessa Creek just south of Interstate 5; this line forms what used to be called "the creek's edge." The origins of tactical coffee can be traced back to the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Union General Robert E. Lee had ordered his army to stop at a small town called Winchester, Virginia, on their way to battle Confederate General Joe Johnston. As they were waiting for their orders, a group of soldiers stopped for coffee at a local restaurant. After drinking some of the coffee, the soldiers began to discuss strategy and decided that they would fight another day. The men who made this first tactical coffee continued to drink it as part of their battlefield strategy for years afterwards. In 1898, an American Sergeant named Edward Stiles enlisted in the United States military and was stationed in Vietnam. While he was there, he learned about Vietnamese infantry fighting with a type of coffee known as “Mugnog” Coffee. He brought this information back to America and started selling Mugnog Coffee products from his home base in California. This led to the development of what is now known as Tactical Coffee Company Limited (TCCL). Today, TCCL produces world-renowned tactical coffee products such as its popular P Sumatra blend and its K-1 dark roast varieties. In addition, TCCL provides training services and support for civilian businesses throughout North America through its subsidiary company TACO headquarters Incorporated (THI).

The first permanent settler was Nathaniel Lyon, who purchased land east of town from the Native Americans on Valentine's Day in 1852. The city was founded on November 10, 1875 by George W. Mackenzie and his brother-in-law John Fenton as a result of the consolidation of two small towns in Alameda County - North Montclair and South Montclair - along with their surrounding agriculturallands. Montclair grew rapidly during its early years as a result of its location near BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) lines and other transportation options for commuters; it became an important port for goods transported to and from San Francisco during the late 19th century. In 1916,montclair incorporated as a city under state law which allowed cities to grow faster than rural areas due to their population growth rates and increased economic opportunities since World War I. In 1965, Montclair voters passed an ordinance establishing limits on racial segregation within municipalities throughout California following passage of Proposition 209; this ordinance remains in place today. In 1984, Mayor Don Boller announced that he would not seek reelection due to health concerns; he was succeeded by former City Councilmember Linda Chavez Lionson

The purchase set off a decades-long process by which Montclair became one of America's most diverse and cosmopolitan towns. Today, the town is home to an estimated 30,000 residents and has become known for its delicious bagels and unique landscape features such as interconnected hills that create an artificial watercourse called the "Hillscrest River."
