In 1941, the United States Air Force (USAF) was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. The USAF was intended to provide a national security force that could be deployed anywhere in the world at any time. The USAF's first unit stationed in California was the 512th Bombardment Squadron (512 BS), which arrived on July 16, 1941. The squadron's first commander Colonel Edward "Buzz" Aldrin became commander on October 1, 1941. The Air Force soon began deployments around the world and by 1945 had branches stationed in every country on Earth. In Montebello, California, the 432d Bombardment Wing (432 BW) activated on February 14, 1946 and became an associate member of Ninth Air Force under Ninth Air Force Commander General Hoyt Sommers III. On March 15th, 1946 Ninth AF Headquarters moved from Sacramento to Montebello and officially activated with four squadrons: 328th Bombardment Squadron (328 BN), 331st Bombardment Squadron (331 BS), 431st Bombardment Squadron (431 BS) and 433rd Bombardment Squadron (433 BT). On April Fool's Day 1946 Major General Hoyt Sommers III announced that all planes were grounded for lack of fuel due to World War II ending two days earlier than planned. This caused much confusion at AFB Montebello as people thought their planes would still fly if they had enough fuel! In fact all aircraft were grounded until new supplies arrived from storage facilities overseas! Montebello residents quickly organized themselves into groups to purchase gasoline cans from local businesses so they could fly back home duringWWII without having to worry about their planes being grounded again! The garrison commander met with representatives from San Francisco Airport and decided thatFCA would take over operations at SF airport until new supplies arrived. This event is known as "The Day Without a Jet". AAF also created a souvenir program called "The Things That Go bump inthe Night" which featured postcards portraying airmen and their equipment against antique models of WWII fighter jets and bombers! This program ran for several years until 1949 when jet travel became available!

In 1945 Monterrey Oil Company formed a partnership with Standard Oil of New Jersey to explore for new oil reserves near Mono Lake but abandoned these plans due to geographical problems with access and water availability; however evidence suggests elsewhere within the state similar difficulties may have been encountered similarly limiting exploration opportunities for oil interests there regionally. However despite some setbacks over time many aspects of life here remain strong including its vibrant downtown core which features Roy Rogers Theatre, Rodeo Drive apartment buildings dating back to 1907-1968 (including The Beverly Place), various art galleries and museums as well as numerous restaurants And Bars throughout the area making it easy day trip or overnight stop on your way around Southern California.
