The Montebello Army Club was organized in 1909 as the Montebello Legionnaires' Protective Association. It became a separate organization in 1912 and changed its name to the Montebello Army Club in 1917. The club served as a social and fraternal support group for the military of World War I and II. After World War II, the club helped form the San Diego-based Military Order of Armed Forces (MOAF) and donated funds to help new members join. In 1971, MOAF merged with another San Diego-based military order, the American Legion, to become The American Legion/Montebello Army Club Incorporated.

Montebello was founded by silver miners in 1849, and quickly became a major center of the Pacific Northwest. The town reached its peak during the late 19th century, when it had a population of around 100,000 people. However, after decades of decline and loss of jobs in the mining industry, Montebello fell into obscurity until recent times. Today, it is a small community located about 20 miles northwest of Los Angeles, with a population of around 10,000 people. The first inhabitants of Montebello were Native American traders and their families who lived on the nearby Plain de los Muertos site for many years before moving to what is now Montebello in 1824. Early settlers were Spanish immigrants who arrived in search of land grants and ranching opportunities. After several years they decided to move westward rather than southward as some had suggested because there was little available land east of San Gabriel Mountains. In 1849, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Montebello while exploring for new discoveries in the surrounding area. With this news came an influx of new settlers from all over California including those from San Francisco and other Bay Area towns such as Oakland and Sacramento. Within weeks of starting construction on his adobe house at Fourth Street and Main Avenue (now Main Street), James Wolk began trading goods with local Indians for food and trade goods he brought back with him on his long journey downriver from Monterey Bay through Santa Cruz County to find treasure hidden along the way. Wolk's venture proved successful; within months he had organized a company that purchased 1acre (0.40 hectares)of land east side Of Main Avenue where he built his adobe home which still stands today - one indication that early settlement was profitable enough to support multiple buildings rather than just one man's residence alone. By 1860, Wolk had developed three commercial areas: The Old European Storeroom off Fourth Street; Agrarian Storerooms at Third Street & Park Avenue; And Agrarian Dwellings East Side at Seventh street between First & Second Avenues supporting up to twenty Employees engaged in agriculture or horticulture... these structures are still standing today testifying to early economic success." Every day during the 1850s more people poured into Montebello looking for gold found only two miles away at Sutter's Mill near Russian River canyon - making it one of the most widespread gold rushes ever conducted in North America! But within months most everyone returned home empty-handed due tofpossessing very little money or equipment beyond what they could carry home with them! Mining operations continued intermittently throughout much of the 1850s but gradually decreased output due bothto competition from other regions as well as technological advances that made strikes harder to win despite superior ore quality." In fact Stanford University professor George Maston has written "the discovery[of]ilver led directly to developmentof Mineshaftsandminesfieldwork" thereby explaining how largescale Mexican silvermining became possible without any assistance from United States Government". AngloAmerican Mining Company soon took over production while US companies Argus Mining Company (founded by John Fitch), Phelps Dodge Minerals Company (founded by Elias Pinchot), Bancroft Copper Mines Company (formed by Hiram Browne), Consolidated Copper Mines Company (formed by David Starr Rothschild) among others mined more easily accessible coal seams closer to downtown Los Angeles."
The area now known as Montebello was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The town was founded on a small hill that is now located near the city of Sacramento. In 1848, when California became a United States territory, Montebello became part of newly created Sacramento County. The town rapidly grew and soon found itself on the edge of development, but it remained an important center for farm and ranching activities until the mid-19th century. By 1860, however, Montebello had started to decline as a result of heavy competition from other nearby towns. Its population peaked in 1890 at over 10,000 people, but it declined again by 1920 due to continued farming activity and racism against Native Americans. Today, only a few scattered remains remain of Montebello’s early years
