Montebello was founded in 1892 by James L. Chandler and his brothers, after they moved from Newark, New Jersey to the Montebello area of California. The first coffee house in Montebello was called "The Coffee House" and it served coffee until 1915. In 1916, the Chandler brothers started a roastery in Montebello that continues to produce delicious cup of coffee today.
In 1846, the Montebello HOTEL was built in what is now Montebello, California. The hotel was designed by Elisha Richardson and it soon became popular for its beautiful gardens, pool, and fine dining. The hotel prospered until 1907 when it burned down. The hotel reopened in 1909 as the MONTEBELLO HOTEL with a new design by Alfred Hitchcock. In the 1920s, the MONTEBELLO HOTEL underwent a major renovation that included enlarging the main salon and adding an underground level with restaurants and a ballroom. In 1941, during World War II, the MONTEBELLO HOTEL became one of several hotels in Southern California used as air-raid shelters. After the war ended, the montebello Hotel continued to serve as a luxury resort until its closure in 1957. Today, part of the old building remains abandoned while other parts have been renovated into apartments and businesses.

Monterey Bay is a rapidly shrinking body of water that includes Montebello, California. The community was founded in 1853 by Juan Bautista de Anza as part of his Rancho San Miguel del Monte land grant. In 1865, the U.S. Army built a military post at the site and renamed it Fort Niles after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War there. In 1868, Mexican immigrants led by José Joaquin Murrieta landed at what is now Monterey Harbor on an ox-drawn wagon and set up a small community near present-day Salinas. Their story began with Sanchez’s marimba (a type of drum) which he brought over from Mexico in 1847 to sell to local farmers. On July 4th, 1868, José Joaquin Murrieta erected the first log cabin in Monterey Bay and named itMontebello after his home state of New Mexico where he had been born two years earlier. The town’s growth was due to its location at the mouth of Monterey Creek and access to nearby agricultural lands as well as trade with nearby Port Hueneme for goods such as lumber and saltwater fish

In 1821, the United States acquired it from Spain for $2 million. The first white person to live in Montebello was Augustus C. Kelley, who arrived in 1824. The town developed around a small trading post called Kelleys Ferry. By 1830, Montebello had a population of about 100 people. It became an incorporated municipality in 1851. In 1865, it became a state enclave and later part of San Francisco County.
