The Montebello Coast Guard Station was established in 1934, and has served the community of Montebello since then. The station is located on the mouth of the San Francisco River, and its mission is to protect the coastlines of Northern California and Southern Oregon. The Coast Guard Station's primary responsibilities include patrols along the coast, search and rescue operations, and disaster response. In addition to its main base at Marina del Rey, which houses a library, an emergency center, as well as a range of Recreational Watercraft capabilities, Coast Guard Station Montebello also operates two fire stations: one on Harbor Island and another on Point Conception. Additionally, both fire stations provide resources for local citizens who may need assistance during emergencies or events such as hurricanes or earthquakes. As a result of its many years of service to the community, Coast Guard Station Montebello has developed strong relationships with many residents. Many residents have attended various functions held at the station in order to celebrate various accomplishments or support program goals. These include holiday parties, reunions with family members living away from home (or those moving back), Fleet Week celebrations (which usually feature displays by Coast Guardsmen stationed at nearby naval bases), and special events that commemorate holidays like Bastille Day or Independence Day.
