Coffee first came to Montebello in the early 1800s. A group of Italian immigrants, led by Giovanni Battista Fratino, started growing coffee beans in a small valley between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The beans were sent back to Italy for processing and then exported to other parts of Europe. In 1847, Giovanni Baptista Fratino founded the California Mission in Montebello with the purpose of bringing Christianity to the region. Coffee was one of the many items that was brought over during this time period. In 1850, Fratino began trading coffee with Japan and soon became well-known throughout Asia for his exports. By 1870, coffee had become so popular in Montebello that it was renamed "Coffee Valley." The town continued to grow as more people moved into its borders and started developing businesses around coffee production. By 1910, Coffee Valley had become an integral part of Montebello society and its economy. During World War II, Coffee Valley was targeted by the Japanese because their factories produced military supplies needed for the war effort. However, due to Allied bombings, most of these factories were destroyed including Fratino's original plantation headquarters which remain today a landmark in Coffee Valley history.

Montebello was founded by the brothers Lorenzo and Cosimo de' Medici in 1540. The settlement grew quickly, thanks to its location on the North Coast of California and its access to water supplies. In 1775, Montebello became the first town in California when it was granted a charter by Governor Larkin. It continued to grow rapidly, becoming an incorporated city in 1853. By 1900, Montebello had a population of over 122,000 people and was one of the most populous cities in California. The city experienced some turmoil during the late 19th century. In 1894, a fire destroyed much of downtown Montebello and killed many people. However, despite these challenges, Montebello steadily grew through the years until it reached its current size and importance. Today, Montebello is home to a number of important institutions within California's government as well as major businesses and industries that contribute significantly to its economy.
Montebello, California was founded in 1849 by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law, George W. Smith. The first post office was established in Montebello on April 12, 1850. The town had a population of only 10 people when it was platted in 1851. It became an incorporated town on May 15, 1856. In 1865, Montebello experienced a large fire that destroyed most of the buildings in the town center and left behind a vast open field where most of the families lived until they were able to rebuild elsewhere after the fire. There was also significant growth in agricultural production during this time as monoculture became more prevalent throughout much of California due to improved irrigation systems and increased acreage for agriculture. In 1905, following passage of the Geographic Names Act of 1906, Montebello became part of the new City of Los Angeles County. In 1910, changes were made to the zoning laws that limited housing development in downtown Montebello so that it could become more commercialized with more warehouses and factories built there instead. As a result, many older homes were lost or converted into apartments over time while newer houses began to be erected nearby along Agricultural Boulevard and other streets near downtown Los Angeles County limits
