Montebello is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 8,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto–Fremont metropolitan area. Montebello is located near the eastern edge of the Central Valley and on its border with Ceres, Nevada. The first Europeans to visit Montebello were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party in 1769. A post office was established at Montebello in 1859, and by 1870 it had a population of about 60 people. The town's name comes from Spanish "Montenegro" (a territory now in Serbia), meaning high ground or mountain peak. At that time there was no real mountain range in Montebello Township; it consisted only of high hills and valleys bordering the San Joaquin Valley. In 1872, during the gold rush, several men prospecting for gold discovered an unknown stream called Silvermine Creek which ran through Montebello Township and silver-mining operations began soon afterwards on this creek. In 1876, when irrigation became available along Silvermine Creek and other nearby creeks providing water for agriculture throughout much of southeastern California, development along these streams increased rapidly; as a result many new homes were built on sites where water sources once lay undrinkable or unusable due to their depth or hardness (euphemistically known as "water stains"). The townsite at present-day Montebello Heights was laid out by George Crespi in 1865 while he served as Supervisor of Stanislaus County. He named his subdivision after José Antonio Oliva y Gasset who had been killed during the Mexican-American War two years earlier while leading an expedition against Mexican forces at Veracruz Ranchos de las Animas east of Sacramento City (). Oliva's death made him one of only three Americans fatally wounded during that war (). Afterward Crespi donated most of his land to Monterey County for public use., including what is now downtown Monterey Heights ). This donation provoked vehement opposition from some who saw themselves as having been cheated by Crespi; but over time various representatives from Monterey County presented petitions requesting that all or portions of Crespi's presidential grant be used instead for public purposes within their county boundaries - something which finally happened upon referendum approval in 1888 following protracted litigation.). Aftermath: Many families moved into downtown Monterey Heights between 1888 and 1912 when ranching ceased operations around here because they could not afford to maintain expensive buildings near precious water supplies

Montebello is a small community located in southern Kern County, California. It was founded by John D. Carr and his wife, Maria, on November 5, 1874. The first post office was established at Montebello on December 1, 1875. In 1907 the name of the community was changed to honor George Washington Carver. Montebello has a population of just over 2,000 people as of 2010 census estimates. The majority of the residents are white (94%), but there is some minority representation with Hispanic (7%) and Asian (2%) populations. The median age for residents is 57 years old according to the 2010 census estimate. There are no schools in Montebello; all students attend local high school in nearby Kern Valley and Petaluma Unified School Districts provide daycare services for children aged 3-18 years old during weekday mornings or afternoons. The community took its name from George Washington Carver who settled here around 1874 while working as a farmhand on Carr's Rancho San Miguelomejo near Bakersfield. At that time it consisted of only one house and twenty acres of land Grantside Farm which still stands today adjacent to Highway 395 east of town limits
