Today's downtown business district began growth when developers built new homes in the early 1960s; much of that growth has been attributed to businesses such as Chevron and City National Bank which have since moved away from downtown. In 1984, a plaque honoring Ulysses S. Grant was placed in front of Ranchita High School in Ranchita Canyon after his death at 91 years old; he had also attended Montebello High School where he played football for one year before enlisting in World War I (1915-17). Grant had worked his way up through American Civil War bureaucracy until becoming Secretary of State under President James Buchanan in 1868. He later served as general during Reconstruction following America's return from slavery (1877-81). As part of Ulysses S.'s presidential legacy, a bust dedicated to him stands outside theUlysses S. Grant Presidential Library & Museum on Monument Drive NE in Washington D., D.C.. Montebello is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,465 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and within the San Joaquin Valley. The name Montebello comes from two Spanish words: monte (mountain) and bello (beautiful). In 1849, William Castro bought 640 acres (272 hectares) of land near present-day Montebello from José Antonio Mexicano for $5 per acre. The land was part of Rancho Rinconada which belonged to Juan Bautista Sutter. Mexican cattle drives led to the discovery of oil wells in this area in 1901, and with its easy access to transportation and natural resources, ranching became very successful. Mr. Castro died in 1908 without any children to take over his holdings; however, his nephews continued running the business until it was solderenationalized in 1969 when Kern County formed. In 1906 developer Waddell Clark built a home called "Casa Grande" on what would become known as Commerce Street east of town center. This large house still stands today as a museum property open to the public on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm during school terms! A new high school opened in 1959 adjacent to Casa Grande and quickly outgrew that building – so much so that construction began on an even larger high school campus just south of town before finally completing it in 1966! Today's Campus includes three buildings - one being used as the Administration Building; one serving as classrooms/workrooms for various grades across five schools; one housing locker rooms/bathrooms for both boys and girls between 8th through 12th grade;one club house with gymnasium/.
