(The name Montebello comes from Spanish: "Monterey") Montebello's history began with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769. They named their new settlement after Mount Diablo, which they saw as a potential location for a new capital of California due to its height above sea level and desert climate. Monterey eventually became the capital of California; however, many early Monterey residents left to found other settlements because they found it difficult to maintain their landholdings against Mexican land grants made by Spain following its expulsion from Mexico in 1821. In 1848, during California's Gold Rush era, about 30 miners discovered gold near what is now Montebello; this led to increased settler activity in the area and helped spur development around town. The first post office was established in 1860; however, it did not stay open long because most mail was delivered by Stagecoach Lines instead of wagon trains then common methods of transportation at that time. In 1871, when roads were built through central Contra Costa County linking various villages and towns within easy reach of each other, Montebello became an important stop on these roadways. Over time more stores opened up along these roads and more people started moving into town; consequently, the population grew rapidly but without much change until 1925 when an all-new high school was constructed adjacent to downtown as part of a larger project billed as "A Better Town". Today downtown Montebello retains some historic buildings including portions of the old courthouse (now used as apartments), fire station #1 (now a museum), local grocery store/cafeteria combo known as Mrs Tutti's (closed since 1984), Masonic Temple No 2 & 3 (both closed since 1975) and two bank branches - First National Bank & Trust Company (closed since 1978) and Peoples State Bank - both closed since 1997. Other notable properties include several popular restaurants - such as Justine's French Restaurant & Lounge & Bistro L'Amico e Nicolò Paganini ($35 per person specialties only) - along with several small businesses that have been around unchanged for decades like Garden Store #2 (& Gourmet Market next door) or Golden Fleece Clothing emporium ($) which has been open continuously since 1907!

Montebello, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of Mono Lake and is about an hour's drive from San Francisco. Montebello is named after Italian explorer and conqueror Giovanni da Montezello. The first mention of Montebello was in 1769 when Lieutenant Colonel George Vancouver noted an Indian encampment nearby. The community began to form around 1868 when several families bought land near the now defunct Monterrey Adobe mission on Mono Lake which they called "El Rancho de las Aguas Calientes". This ranch led to development around the lake as well as along Highway 395 which ran through Montebello at that time known as "La Via Real" or "the real road". Development increased with the opening of the Siskiyou Mountains Railway in 1887 and railroad accessibility made it easier for people to move into this corner of Inyo County. In 1907, a few years after incorporation, Montebello became home to its first post office and by 1912 had a grocery store and 3 churches serving it. By 1925 there were 11 businesses in town with no less than 14 residents working within them; two homes also served as businesses then too! A new school was built in 1927 followed by three more until 1950 when all but one business closed down because of World War II bombing raids that destroyed most downtown buildings including banks and stores (although one woman managed to keep her business open during air-raids). Afterward there was little growth until about 1970 when some construction started on what would become known as El Rancho Drive leading out from town center onto Mirror Lake before ending abruptly just north of US 95/US 6 exit 10A). As recently as 2000 only three structures remained standing in downtown: a general store, a bakery (now closed), and an insurance agency (now part of Wells Fargo). However over time many more businesses have moved into downtown since then making up for any lost commerce during those tough times. Downtown has seen recent revitalization with several restaurants coming online such as Rascal Flatts Casino nightspot which opened up next door to J'accuse BBQ & Brewery back in late 2017 following days long discussion between local restaurateurs, developers/property managers, artists (& musician friends) & city planners who felt that Blvd des Arts intersection needed something new - much like their old favorite spot where Live Oak Lounge used to be sandwiched between two fast food restaurants (!), right across from Stonestreet Mall! With so many new arrivals DowntownMontebello has been able to take off again & brings good vibes not only nightly but also throughout the day! Today DowntownMONTEBELLO features several popular bars/restaurants including Zuka’s Pizza (formerly Red Lobster), Coyote Cafe (formerly Moe’s Tavern), Reilly’s Irish Pub likely due due reopened by developer Tony Reilly himself last year after being vacant for several years& Dirty Jobs Sports Bar - formerly Sleepy Joe's SPORTS BAR - reopening soon adjacent KFC!!! All told there are nearly 20 different businesses occupying various parts of downtown each morning & evening now THAT'S BUSINESS FIREWORKS!!!!!
