Montebello is a city located in the Mono County, California region. As of the 2010 census, its population was 57,[1] down from 71 during the 2000 census. The city occupies an area of 1.7 square miles (3 km2),[2] and is located on the peak of Montebello Mountain at an elevation of 6,992 feet (2,814 m). Montebello's ZIP code is 95260. The history of Montebello goes back to 1853 when John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on the summit of Montebello Mountain after his discovery in 1847 of gold near Sacramento. A post office was established at Montebello in 1859, and became a town in 1861 under control by Los Angeles County. In 1911 it merged with neighboring Fairfield to become one municipality with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1922-23 during World War II, much of what is now downtown was built as part of Project Aztec which was designed to provide housing for troops stationed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Many local businesses were also destroyed or closed due to wartime necessity such as Amalgamated Clothing and Rubber Company which lost its production plants because they were used to make military uniforms; Albertsons department store had their first store open since 1915; and many other businesses that refused to close because they couldn't compete with wartime prices or available labor force capacity did so nonetheless.[3][4] On October 15th 1905 a fire started while Santa Anita racetrack was being built on what is now east side streets between First Street and Second Street in downtown Montebello; this caused extensive damage both inside track barns and outside where water filled numerous trenches that extended about three stories deep into soft earth substrates covered with straw then lit beacons hanging from low rafters above flames that could be seen from mile away; over time these symbols became known as "The Bells" (or just "The Bells") because each sound made by them signified different amounts or phases of construction progress along with cheers from workers who would watch from rooftops).[5][6] The total value ($600) put into recovered property $4 million dollars today still makes it oneof Monterey County’s largest single contributions ever brought in through restitution efforts[7].

The first Europeans to visit Montebello were the Spanish in 1769. The Mission Santa Margarita was founded in 1821, and by 1846, over fifty missions had been built in what is now Montebello. In 1867, the State of California acquired title to all of Monterey County from Mexico and established it as a part of the new state. Monterey's history goes back even further than that. A small village called Montecito developed on the site of modern-day Montebello in 1776 by Spanish colonists who were seeking refuge from American Revolution forces. For many years, Montecito served as a center for citrus production and commerce within central California. In 1863, US troops burned down theVillage Greenhouses at Montecito after an unsuccessful uprising against Mexican rule there. Montecito reverted to Spanish hands following the war and continued to be used as a ranching community until it was abandoned due to lack of resources in 1887. Over time, some residents returned to their old village while others moved away altogether; by 1942 only one house remained standing in original montecitoplate form (now part of downtown).
