Montebello, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1869 by James W. Hutton and his wife Eliza Campbell Hutton. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is named after General Alessandro Michele, who lost an arm in battle at Verona in 1759 and became a general in the French army under Napoleon I. Most of Montebello's notable residents were born or died there during its early years: James W. Hutton, founder; Eliza Campbell Hutton (1814-1900), first woman to own property here; and Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1924). In 1910, John F Kennedy (1917-1963) was born there.
The Montebello area in California was first settled by the Cahuilla people in the late 18th century. In 1849, José Francisco Moreno and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto built a ranch there after purchasing land from the Rancho El Monte de las Pulgas. The two men also founded a schoolnearby. The town of Montebello was platted in 1865, and became an important junction on state Route 66. It was destroyed by fire in 1927, but was rebuilt with new infrastructure and renamed Montebello after its founder.
