The Montebello Naval Base is home to the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet and is one of the most important naval installations in the Western Hemisphere. The base has a rich history that dates back to 1851 when Commodore James S. Westmoreland arrived with his squadron of warships at this site for coastal defense against Mexican aggression. The navy has played an important role in Padres history, as Commodore George Fentongrew served as both Commandant and first Superintendent of the military school at San Diego from 1907-1914, during which time he also founded America's only naval air station on Isla de la Palma, now known as El Norte National Park. From 1941- 1945, the navy operated three large shipsyards here - USS Enterprise (CVN-65), USS Yorktown (CVN-8) and USS Greasey (AGC-1). In 1982, these yards were closed down due to budget cuts but have been reopened by the present owner, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) as an educational research center focused on energy conservation and sustainable energy technologies. During World War II, Montebello was home to several torpedo boats including PT boat #564 which was sunk off Cape Horn by Japanese forces; GPI#3B7 which fought off American daylight bombing raids over Eniwetok Atoll during WWII; JMF#2A6V which patrolled Kwajalein Atoll in 1946; and JMSDF#4R9 which aided in Operation Neptune's Spear during Tet Offensive on Vang Vieng Island in Vietnam. Montebello is a town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Montebello were Spanish traders from Baja California who landed on the west coast of present-day California in 1769. In 1821, Captain Francisco Terrero and his party of about twenty men left San Diego for Monterey Peninsula and found anchorage near what is now called Point Reyes National Park before continuing their journey up the Pacific Coast. They named their new settlement after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's home town of Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In 1836, John Sutter discovered gold at Sutter's Mill on Mount Shasta and founded Sacramento City on land that he had bought from José Joaquin de Arguelles y Valdez just east of present-day downtown Montebello. The city gradually grew as more and more people came to find gold and silver throughout California during the mid 19th century. By 1851, there were over 2,000 people living in Sacramento City when it incorporated as an independent city under the name "Monterey". On December 6, 1860 (the date that Sacramento City incorporation was granted), a group led by Captains George Waddell and Augustus Herrmann set out from Monterey with intentions of finding a route to central North America through Cape Horn or Panama without having to pass through Central America or South America first. They reached landfall off southern Oregon about 160 miles south of where they estimated cape Horn would be located but failed to find any evidence of passage around Cape Horn or any way back across South America alive or dead. After returning trip via sea from Portland Harbor on February 14–16 they submitted their report to Congress which directed President James K Polk to send an expedition against these supposed obstacles instead sending Simon Bolivar Expedition instead which reached Peru's coast four months later on April 15th). This aborted mission has been attributed with contributing directly to American Civil War starting two years later when Confederate forces destroyed some supplies seen sailing past Spanish warships off Southern Chile while attempting this same passage into North America - thus provoking war between those nations partly because no one could prove definitively that they had Passage Allowed! In 1865 Ulysses S Grant became President after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and ordered all Union troops along our Western frontier withdrawn eastward towards Richmond Virginia until such time as peace could be restored in our continent following General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House ending World War One; however within days due largely to political unrest among many easterners streaming westward (particularly among Native Americans) most soldiers turned back north towards our capital once hostilities ceased in order not too upset what seemed like another victory for our northern enemies... even though we still held all key railroads leading into major cities including New York City & Philadelphia making it almost impossible for us ever fully withdraw! Although much remains unknown about those times we call "The Great Western Scandal" nonetheless history does record that we did learn how important it was for both sides not get too far ahead technologically...and importantly...to remember always those who sacrificed so much more than anyone else did!
