The Montebello Police Department has been providing police services in Montebello, California for over 80 years. The department was first organized on July 1, 1887. In 1913, the Montebello Police Department became an independent agency and began to use the name of "Department of Public Safety." On November 5, 1923, the Montebello Police Department merged with the Livermore Police Department to form a single department. On December 15, 1927, the department changed its name to the "Montebello Police Department." The current name of the department is honorific and refers to its history as a law enforcement organization. The Montebello Police Department has jurisdiction over all of unincorporated territory within Mavericks Ranch Township including portions of Livermore and Pleasanton Counties. The force consists of around 300 officers who are divided into four sections: Patrolmen/Sergeant (P/S), Detective Bureau (DB), Traffic Section (TS) and Special Investigations Section (SI). Officers are housed in three buildings located on Fourth Street in downtown Montebello: One building was used as headquarters from 1925-1930; another building was used from 1934-1967; and a thirdbuilding was used from 1970-1983. The patrolmen/sergeant division provides policing services within Mavericks Ranch Township while also providing service throughout Contra Costa County. Officer grades range from P/S I - which is basic policing - up through sergeant II status which is equivalent to a detective lieutenant rank. Sergeant III ranks provide advanced policing skills such as hostage negotiators and Narcotics Intelligence Unit support activities. Detective Bureau provides investigative services within Mavericks Ranch Township while also providing service throughout Contra Costa County Officers in this division are assigned responsibility for investigating criminal activity including homicides, kidnapping cases, vehicle thefts etcetera Additionally they may be responsible for executing search warrants or conducting traffic stops under certain circumstances . Detective bureau members can also be called upon by district commanders for special operations or emergency patrols . Traffic section officers provide law enforcement patrols that work primarily within municipal boundaries . These officers typically have authority over issues such as driving without a license or parking tickets . Special Investigations section detectives operate outside normal police jurisdiction but may be called upon by district commanders for specialized investigations

Montebello is a small, unincorporated town in Kern County, California, located about 12 miles northwest of Bakersfield. At the time of the 2010 census, its population was 3,521. The name Montebello comes from two Spanish words: MONTE and BELLO. The town is twinned with Menton in France. The first Europeans to visit Montebello were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and hisriends on April 2, 1542 when they sighted land that would eventually become Monterey Peninsula. It wasn't until 1769 that Captain James Cook sailed into Monterey Bay and saw the now defunct Mission San Diego at what is now Pacific Heights. After the mission's closure in 1834, many people left for new opportunities in California. One such opportunity was found by an entrepreneur named Manuel Nieto who bought some land east of San Francisco and began developing it into a small township called Rancho de las Pulgas y Toro (later renamed Rancho Bernardo). From there he started selling milk to farmers and later built a dairy so large it required four milk trucks to deliver it to his customers. In 1853 he donated 1/3 of his property along present day Santa Clara Street to build a school which becameknown as La Salle College; today’s La Jolla High School stands on part of this same property. In 1875 Manuel Nieto passed away leaving behind over 400 acres (160 hectares) of undeveloped ranchland for development including parts of what is today Montebello Canyon Park It wasn't until 1926 when Don Hecht purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present-day Montebello from José Nunez Campos that he founded Hecht Gardens which included both gardens as well as an airstrip capable Of accommodating bombers during World War II Today's Hecht Gardens contain more than 2400 feet (700 metres) worthof plants spread over an area measuring more than 25 acres (.90 hectare). Between 1936 and 1946 another key figure in the history of Montebello was Ozzie Maull who served as mayor three times He developed much of what remains today around Main Street corner Sixth Street between bustling Broadway Road and Justia Avenue; one block south from where Highway 99 meets Interstate 5 . While Hecht never achieved international recognition for his garden designations like botanist Rudolf Steiner did within Germany or America - largely due to lacklustre finances - his legacy will live on long after he has long since passed away . Montebello is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, approximately 120 miles east of Sacramento and 80 miles west of Fresno. A mill built at Montebello during 1825 processed gold coins brought overland from California. The town began to grow rapidly when roads were built connecting it to other towns in the area. In 1869, settlement of Montebello proper began with the construction of a school and store on Main Street. The population reached 100 persons by 1871, when an new post office was established at Montebello. By 1886, there were over 500 residents living in town proper. The railroad arrived in 1895 and helped to increase commerce and industry in the town; however, soon after it became a part of Fresno County.
