The Monterey Park Air Force Base provides an airfield and surrounding community with access to fighter, bomber, and tanker aircraft for use by the Air Force. The airport was first built in 1942 as a military airfield providing access to theAAF's Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. The base was enlarged in 1945 and became a subordinate unit of the California Air National Guard. In 1948, the original runway was replaced with a new one measuring 3,500 feet long by 150 feet wide. The old runway is now used for general aviation purposes only. In 1970, the California Air National Guard activated its own wing at Monterey Park AFB as part of its reorganization of reserve components of state governments within the newly created Department of Defense umbrella organization. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron were moved from Sacramento to Monterey Park AFB while two squadrons were assigned to each wing: 4th Bombardment Wing (Heavy) which had been stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona since 1941; and 8th Tactical Fighter Wing (Eagle) which had been stationed at MCAS Miramar Marine Corps Station San Diego since 1951. Each squadron's flying activity rotated through both wings during their allotted rotations between May 1st - September 30th annually. In 1988, after more than 50 years without an operational jet mission at Monterey Park AFB, it became apparent that they were losing their combat capability due to economic constraints on USAF investment in advanced aircraft programs such as stealth fighters and bombers . Accordingly , Majestic Airways Incorporated leased portions of runway 06L/24R from CalAir NG for $4 million over 10 years starting in 1988 under then Commander Lt Colonel Jeffrey Jaffe ; Col Michael Ahern assumed command effective October 15 th 1989 . After construction began on what would become known as "The World's First Stealth Jet Base ," Majestic Airlines leased or purchased additional land adjacent to runways 06L/24R until it reached full capacity on February 5 th 1991 when all leases expired . Jaffe retired from active duty service on February 17 th 2001 after serving 43 years including 32 with the US Air Force Special Operations Command where he flew high altitude reconnaissance missions over Afghanistan using NightHawk helicopters while concurrently commanding two USAF detachment units deployments totaling six months duration throughout SOUTHWEST ASIA

The name "Monterey Park" first appeared on September 28, 1892 as part of the settlement of Rancho Monterey de la Brea by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his brother José Joaquín López y Mendoza. The current City of Monterey Park was formed on January 1, 1965 when portions of unincorporated Santee and Spring Valley were transferred from Chula Vista to San Diego County. The original boundaries for what would become Monterey Park were First Street on the north side of El Torreon Avenue east to Orange Avenue south; Second Street on the south side of El Torreon Avenue east to Central Avenue; Third Street between Central and Orange Avenues; Fourth Street between Central and Anaheim Avenues; and Fifth Street west from Anaheim along what is now State Route 66 (now I-5). On May 16, 1978, annexation of portions of Whittier Heights by Los Angeles led to creation of that city as well. On November 3, 1984, Monterey Park voters passed an ordinance annexing Tower Grove Village adjacent to its eastern border due to concerns about increased traffic congestion within Porter Ranch adjoining Tower Grove Village's open space land parcels accessible only through wide streets which are too narrow for cars or buses travelling in opposite directions together creating bottlenecks that impacted daily life in nearby neighborhoods such as Porter Ranch and Canyon View
