Monterey Park, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after San Bernardino and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The original inhabitants of Monterey Park were Mission Indians from New Mexico and Colorado who founded a small town on the edge of present-day Monterey Park in 1854. TheCity's history can be traced back to 1854 when Mexican soldiers under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invaded California and burned down our Mission Indian village on Canoga Creek (now known as Playa del Rey). In response to this violation of Mexican land rights and instigation by Progreso mayor José Altamirano, American settlers arrived in what is now Monterey Park on October 12, 1855 with intentions of ranching and farming until Mexican independence was achieved two years later. In 1861 local ranchers formed the "Rancho Viejo" Association to purchase 8,000 acres (3 km²) east of present-day Monterey Park from Alvarado cattle rancher Manuel Nieto for $5 million dollars which would provide open space for grazing and farming along with schools, churches and other civic amenities necessary for earlyCalifornian settlement. Farming operations commenced on this new land during 1862-1863; however due to lack of water resources available throughout much of Southern California at that time it failed to generate much economic success. In 1865 local citizens organized what became known as "The Golden Generation," which consisted mostly English-speaking Americans between ages 25-35 who had bought or leased property within their first few years post independence. They spearheaded an effort to purchase more than 5 square miles (15 km²) extending from Canoga Mesa Boulevard southward into downtown Monterey Park from private landowners including Ayer & Blissenburg real estate agent Samuel Morse Brownell Sr., Wm Fenton dentist John Cavanaugh, brothers Julius & William Bockert liquor store owner Terence D’Arcyanand banker Edwin Swayne among others Monterey Park consolidated as a municipality on January 1, 1907 through annexation by Escondido

Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 86,821 at the 2010 census. Monterey Park is part of the Downtown Los Angeles Historic District. The history of Monterey Park can be traced back to 1847 when cattle and horses were sold by José María Cámpora to Francisco Alvarado from Rancho San Vicente de los Bancos. In 1857, two years after Mexico gained independence from Spain, San Vicente de los Bancos was renamed Monterey Park in honor of Captain George Monterey who had fought for Mexican independence on an expedition to explore the central California coast in 1839. In 1870, Leland Stanford bought Lots 10 and 11 in what is now northwest corner of City Hall Square for $2,500 dollars. He named his new town "Monterey Park" after his home state of California's most populous county – Marin County – and laid out streets parallel to San Francisco Bay as well as a harbor that would serve as its commercial center. By 1872, Stanford had built a small wooden church and four homes on lots donated by fellow civic members including local physician John Sutter and banker James A. Hutton Jr.. When the first post office opened in 1880 (named for President James Kenedy), residents voted overwhelmingly not to name their community after their state's capital but rather chose "Downtown Los Angeles." By 1899 when Monterey Park became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council members (the first municipality outside of downtown LA), it had reached its current size with a population of over 50 people; today it has over 100 inhabitants living within its borders. Despite being bypassed by future downtown development during the early years of Plan West – which focused predominantly on Central Avenue between North Broadway/Alameda Street and First Street/Los Angeles Boulevard –monterey park Today remains one of the most vibrant neighborhoods outside downtownLA despite having few stops or connections directly onto major thoroughfares like Central Avenue or First Street/Los Angeles Boulevard; this is largely due to the efforts of Mayor Pat Casey who has worked tirelessly to maintain alleyways leading into monterey park through designation as publicly-owned open space rich with cultural experiences for all ages
