Monterey Park is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 24,545 at the 2010 census. The Monterey Park post office was established in 1887 and discontinued in 1961. It was re-established in 1984 and served until it closed in 2013. The Monterey Park area has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since before 10,000 BC. A smallpox pandemic forced them to move back into their traditional homeland around 575 AD. They were replaced by Europeans as the dominant culture in this region during the 18th century. In 1847, Mexican landowner Manuel Sanchez de la Torre donated land to build a dry goods store and school on what is now Fourth Street between Broadway and University Avenue. This gave rise to what would become Monterey Park's first permanent resident community, which spanned 3 square miles (8 km2). In 1861, when San Diego County was formed from parts of Los Angeles County, Monterey Park became part of that county as well. A post office called "Monterey" was opened at one end of Third Street near El Sobrante Creek on November 15, 1887 by Simeon Borenstein who named his new town after Mount Diablo – an 8000 foot high mountain located about 26 miles (41 km) south of San Diego along I-5 near Marysville Road east of Interstate 805 entrance.) By 1927 there were 21 mailboxes with an average size of 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) tall and 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) wide inside each box. This long distance service stopped abruptly on September 11th 1929 when Western Union merged with United Parcel Service effective October 1st making international shipping much more difficult; all future USPS services were transferred to UPS! On July 4th 1951 Mayor Hildebrandt dedicated the first public park within city limits – Presidio Parkway . The park stretched from City Hall plaza north to FM 725 east across from US Naval Base adjacent to Navy yards.. Today it remains one of only a few unincorporated areas within City limits still managed by local government faithless bureaucrats! Post Office Plaza had been home for many years prior to its closure due primarily to Save Our Parks campaign spearheaded by then City Manager Donny Barnes directly contacting residents concerned about lack of open space downtown despite huge Expansion plan approved by then Mayor Jerry Ortiz subsequent thereto!) After years dog fighting over who should get credit for designing original civic center building now part of statelyPresidio Golf Course off Old Coast Highway - ultimately it landed on then Community Development Coordinator Dick Kapp who heavily subsidized project resulting in beautiful new civic center addition funded largely with Federal dollars - smack dab in middle of busy shopping district! What could have gone wrong?
